Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
I joined this forum many months ago in search of information, but I don't believe I ever introduced myself, so here goes:
Greetings, My wife Gail and I plan to sell our business to our son Sept. 1, 2011. Hopefully by that date we will have our home, furniture, and extra car sold. Our plans are to go full time, for how long we don't know, but we have the travel bug and desire a change in our lives. We've worked for 33 years without taking vacatons, so we feel its time for us to see our great country, including Alaska.
Most people we have told this too say "Oh, you won't like it, better not sell your home." I ask them "have you ever travelled in an RV?" Of course, they have no idea about this lifestyle. We don't either, except for the many books, CDs, tapes and forums that we have studied for the pas 12 months about full timing and extended travel. We feel we are ready to do this and can't wait. We both know that the hardest part will be leaving the grandchildren. But like we have told them, we actually and truly believe we will now be able to spend more quality time with them than we do now.
We currently own a 1998 Safari Trek 30' MH with no slides. Its been a great MH, and we have enjoyed using it on many weekends. Leave on Friday after work, get to the campgrounds around 9:00pm, leave for home around 01:00pm on Sunday. Fun yes, but not much time. We love fishing on the beach and meeting new friends while camping. I don't recall us ever meeting a person we didn't like at a campground.
Our plans are to ready our Trek for sale in Jan. and buy a larger used MH soon after the sale. We wife really wants a rear bedroom, a gettaway room, which we don't have now. Slide-outs will be nice too, and I desire a DP. We are currently looking at a 2002 Winnebago Journey DL, which I have read good reviews on.
Anyway, this is my story and I look forward to communication in this forum as our adventure into a new lifestyle nears. Sept. will be here before we know it.
Terry

hi , wife and i have the same dream to travel. retiring next july. looking forward to the adventure. hope you have many miles of happy camping ENJOY. SEE YOU ON THE RAD GOOD LUCK
First of all, Jerry and Patsy. (Whichever one of you it is that is typing.) Once you post a comment and realize that you goofed, you can go back into the thread and choose the "More" button to the upper right of your post. Under that button, you'll see a pull-down menu appear that allows one to "Edit". Select that and make your changes. Otherwise, don't worry about the small stuff. I think we all understand and have our own little ideocyncracies. (Is that spelled right? My dictionary is in the RV.)
Now, for Terry G,
I've noticed you on here before and maybe even commented on one of your posts. With my memory, nothing is assured.
Let me officially welcome you as one of the other Terry's here. We all can use new perspectives and new ideas. So, let us hear yours. Any and all questions are welcome and appreciated. In fact, I'm still posting questions even after more than 600 postings. I either am really dumb or forgetful. I can't remember which.

Hello Terry, My husband and I are going full time next year too. And we get the same response from other people we have told of our plan. The way we see it, we have worked all of our lives ( well since we were teenagers ) for other people and raised our children and paid our dues so now its our turn to do what we want. Do not let other people try to talk you out of your dreams to travel. Wellcome to the forum. Glad to meet you.
Thanks everyone for your kind welcome. You know, this is really a BIG DEAL. It consumes my every thought. Gail and I talk about it all the time. We will be looking forward to one day meeting up with some of you folks. For now, as this forum is titled, its all about dreams and turning the dreams into a reality.
Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, and may 2011 be everyone's greatest year ever.
Terry

Merry Christmas and Welcome to the forum. It definately is a big deal and has a way of consuming you. We just started on the road in October and I think the first month was recuperation. Now it is great and new learning experiences also. Enjoy the group....nice people here.
I don't think I introduced us, and for that I'm sorry. We love your fourm, and find it very useful. We are Joy & Rick with 3 cats (Mr. Coors, Hemi & Calente) we live in a 34' Allegro (2008), we sold our lives and started this new life, and LOVE IT. We currently are traveling souther AZ, cuz it's warm. Thank you Terry & Jo for a wonderful web site :) Happy Camping :)
I've been fulltiming in my 27 ft Itasca Spirit 2001 for 8 years. I spend time in Vancouver, BC and up in the Okanagan Valley, a couple of mountain ranges over from the coast. I sometimes travel to California, Oregon and Arizona but have spent winters in cloudy Vancouver without going completely insane. Originally from London, UK, well endowed with biting Brit humour I hardly ever pay to stay unless it is a particularly appealing State Park, like Mount Diablo in the San Francisco area. I meet lots of people even though not staying in campgrounds, have never been afraid, in fact felt safer in the US than in Vancouver. Americans have always been most welcoming, likeable, advised me well and been empathetic to my lifestyle. I'm told an eccentric Brit is quite entertaining; my friends consider me a character and somewhat bonkers so that helps!
As an amateur astronomer I have hooked up with others sharing my passion for the sky such as the Orange County Astronomers. I enjoy giving impromptu sky tours to the uninitiated asking questions and love curious kids. A telescope attracts people like bees to honey and stargazers love to share. If anyone is thinking of visiting the Vancouver area I can give you the lowdown. I've written some stories about living the gypsy life, it's a great adventure!
Good for all of you on the road and working on getting there. Great to meet you on line. Why not come on over to the April rally. We'd love to meet you as they say "live and in person".
(aside: ah you have to love the English language....L eye v and L ih v....both spelled the same way.)

If this is a dumb question, sorry, but what is a gettaway room?

From the description in the original post, it's a separate room other than the bedroom.
Think Toyhauler where the garage can be converted into something else or, in the case of some 5'ers I've looked at, a rear room that is like a den/extra bedroom.

Dreaming and doing the homework necessary.
Looking at: F-350/Ram 3500 type truck, possibly an Airstream or a smaller 5th Wheel.
However, there is still time to change the configuration, just a plan.
OK, thanks. I thought maybe it was one of those connected outdoor rooms. We have a Cedar creek 5th wheel, where the living room actually has a glass door to separate it ffrom the rest of the rig. Never thought of it as a gettaway room, but that makes sense...

It is a spam post. If you'll notice, that post is the first post for that username. A lot of times a spammer will sign up and post in odd places. A lot of times, the topic is irrelevant or there may be little said, but a link will be included in the body of the message. If you go to the thread entitled "Motorhome Sale", you'll see a prime example of one person spamming in the original posting of the thread, and the second (and only other) post is also looking like a spammer.
Usually, someone notifies Howard and Linda of the username and even the link to the forum thread that has the spammer in it. While I have notified them in the past, I have to do it through my home e-mail address for them to accept the message. Since I am at work, I'll have to hope someone else notifies them.

Welcome.Everything said so far by the others doesn't need repeating by me.As a follow business owner, never able to take vacations for 35 of the 43 years we've been married, and always responsible for everything,I know the value of RV living, from your prospective. We were in a 24/7 business, and lived in the property. A friend shared the idea of having an RV packed and ready to go at short notice. We kept it at the back of our property. It was a life saver. We sold that business, and bought a less restrictive type, but still one which kept us from taking extended time. We went several years without an RV and discovered we were unhappy,so got another as a "test" for the dream of F/T. We were able to spend six weeks on the road this summer and are now selling our business and home...a slow process, but we'll get there. I think you are wise indeed to take the freedom the lifestyle promises. I too, have met the friendliest people ever, RV'ing.I hope to join you soon. In the meantime, we'll be away every other week-end and on the road for the summer,'till we get the house and business sold. I wish you the best, and the freedom awaiting you.

Ooooh, someone traveling with cats. We have three fur kids (cats) that we hope to take on the road with us in about 3-5 years (trial trip in two years without the fur kids!).
So, have you been Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah? It's a dark sky park, supposed to be one of the best places to stargaze (other than the top of volcanic peaks in Hawaii, that is).
In the daytime, Natural Bridges is fascinating in its own right. Great hikes and scenery...but very remote.
Thank you for the welcome. 2011 promises to be a very good year for us, a life changing year. Now, if Gail & I can only get rid of this cold bug we both have shared for the past 2 weeks. Miserable.
