Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
Things are looking rough right now. We have had our Prowler camper for over two months now, and were working on it on a very slow pace. The reason being, was that we didn't outright own it yet.
Story: We found the camper through a relative. He got us in touch with the "owner" and we made a promisary note with him to cover the cost of the sale. At the time, my severence pay had not arrived yet, and he said he had to look for the title. SO... a month goes by. We do necessary cleanup to prowler and make our renovation plans. The prowler needed a new ceiling in the front bedroom area, and the bathroom. I didn't want to even start that until the day of sale had been complete. Promisary note or not.
So... i get my severence, call the guy and tell him we have to meet to transfer title. He'd let us move it to our property to do the renovations in the meantime. We get his cell phone answering machine for over a week and he never returns any of our calls. Different stories are being told to us from my wife's family that his dad is sick, that his uncle died... all kinds of stuff. FINALLY, he returns the call. Apologizes that he didn't get back to us and says that all the things we heard were true. Okay, whatever. So we go pick him up and take him to the title place. He says he has to apply for a duplicate title, he can't find it. We get there, they do a search, and there's no record of the thing in his name. EVER.
He acts like a jerk to the lady, telling her that they did the transfer right in this office and starts cursing her out. We had an old plate from inside the cabinets of the prowler and she does a search. It's still registered in the name of the guy that our guy "supposedly" bought it from. So then, we spend about three hours trying to contact this guy. He finally shows up and applies for the duplicate title. No big deal. The lady tells them that they must have only gotten a promisary note notarized there, and that there's NO WAY that the title ever changed hands.
So he applies for the new title and signs a note we wrote up, guaranteeing the transfer of title to us. We write a new promisary with original guy and everyone signs everything right in front of the lady at the title place. She said it was legal. Not really worried about being dicked, but boy has this EVER set us back.
THEN... we have the prowler in my mother-in-law's yard. Her landlord was never happy about it, but gave us time. Well, it's been about two months now, so he says he got complaints about it and said we HAD to move it. Now, i haven't done any of the main work on it. It needs all new tires. He gave us one day. I had to go buy the ball and electrical harness for my van and we just pumped the tires full and hoped they'd last until we got it to our storage bin area, which you can also store vehicles at.
Did this all last night. What a joy. Turns out that the back lights are also in need of great repair. They flicker on each bounce. Still have to get all the tires and get the brakes checked. They seemed fine though.
The positive of it, was that my van handled the trailer well. It was my first time driving with a trailer hooked up and I did well also. The biggest problem though, is that we're running low on funds now and there's little time left before the winter hits here. So i'm actually considering leaving the camper in storage for the winter, and just rubber-tramping with the van for awhile in the south. Not sure yet. We could return in a few months and continue the work on the camper then, and have it fully ready by summer. I dunno.
You have a lot more patience than me.I would not have put up with that much grief for something that needs that much work.Hope you didn't give very much for it.Good luck

Don't let anyone or anything spoil your dream. I had started out with an old pickup popup top camper and then went to an old travel trailer to a Class C that I totally renovated. I now another C that I have been working on as I go. I enjoy this lifestyle as much as any other, even the ultra rich. I may not get there in as much style, but even may enjoy the scenery much better. Have an enjoyable one and you may even learn more about how these rvs tick. I hope you the best!!! Pieere

We're NOT going to let this get us down. We'll start this out with a bit of van-living. We have all the camping gear one would need, and our van is quite awesome. It might be a bit cramped with three cats and us, but we should be able to handle it.
We're leaving the Prowler at either our friend's house, or at the storage facility it's now in, until we come back around April. By then, i'll have more money to finish it off. Also, our friend, actually used to work at a Fleetwood plant, here in Pa. So he'll be able to help me out with some of the work. This camper, only has to last two years, until I get my ESOP. Then we'll definitely upgrade to a new or very near new model.
We've come too far to let the adventure ahead of us, die on the vine. My wife and i have discussed this, and neither of us want to re-join the work force unless we HAVE to. Both of our "long-life" retirement plans are not in the best of odds, so we would like to get a few good years in now, and if it doesn't work out after a few years trying, then okay... at least we tried. I could never live with myself if we didn't try.
So, it's not the original plan, hell... it's FAR from the original plan. It's more "rubber-tramping" than anything, but it's STILL got to be better than this. We basically just ran out of time. It's beginning to get cold here, and it'll take a little bit to get the funds up that I need to fully repair the camper. Very suprised how much the gov't took in taxes on my severence. Totally ruined our plans.
Update: We headed out on October 30th and have been van-living it for now. It's not been too bad. We had minor issues and a tragedy with our cats that almost derailed everything, but we perservered and are very much enjoying ourselves in our van, travelling along the East Coast. Presently, we're in Virginia, and the weather has been awesome for the most part. Thanksgiving was great, as we volunteered at a church function, and got to meet a lot of great people.
The plan now is to continue on through North Carolina, and on to S. Carolina. We'll stay there until about tax time, and then head back to Pa. to take care of the taxes and get our Prowler fixed up good, and spend some quality time with our family. Missing our family has been the toughest part of this. In all our pics, we're smiling, but we go to bed each night with tears in our eyes, missing our family.
I know a lot of people have blogs, and I plan to get one going on a real blog site soon, but for now, we've been documenting the trip on FaceBook. All our friends are there, and it just seemed the better place for us to do so. If anyone wants to check it out, here's the link: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/pages/Jones-Journies/105882906147113
I think there's some pretty great pictures there that you might enjoy. Of our stops so far, i've really loved Assateaque Island, in Maryland. Wild horses on beaches are just so photogenic. Loved it. Please check it out. All you have to do is "like" it, to have access to the pics. I guess you have to be a facebook member too. :)
We hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and that you all have a wonderful holiday season.

Your FB pics are great! Just spent my second(last Christmas was my first) holiday away from my kids and grands so I can relate to missing your family. Try to talk to them often and we downloaded Skype to see and talk to each other too. Happy Holidays!
We, too, miss our granddaughters in MD age 4 and 1. We fly from Alabama where we are now camped this weekend to spend 6 days with them. While there we will set up Skype. We also talk at least once a week. Daughter suggested we send them postcards. We send about two a week and she is making a scrapbook for each of them. This might work for you too.
Good luck with your plans. We also had setbacks (in fact truck is in shop AGAIN as I write this) but all in all we are not sorry we made this decision.
Oh yea, when we lived in NJ we used to camp every year right across from Assateague Island. We would spend time over there watching the ponies. The most fun is seeing them get into campers coolers, tip them over and search for goodies.
If you need a campground near Dillon, South Carolina, stop in at Bass Lake RV Campground. Dillon is just across the state line from North Carolina on I-95. Tell Guy (the owner) that Betty and Dave recommended the place to you!
We may very well be headed back there after leaving Indiana!

Thanks everyone. I hadn't thought of Skype. Currently we just burn up our cell minutes. LOL Skype might not work too good at the library. We won't have an air card until February, but it still will work in the parking lots of the places with wifi, so we will download that. Great tip. I'll inform my wife about that campground now, Betty and Dave. She found one that's really cheap for the off season right now. We can stay for two weeks, fully loaded site, for only 150 bucks. End of season sale they're calling it. It's still in the 80's there. We'll be done in Virginia on Tuesday, and heading out. Think we'll skip North Carolina (only a day at Kitty Hawk), and head right to SC. Can't wait. :)
There will always be some setbacks. One just learns to work around them and through them. The main thing is for each of you to remain as optimistic as possible and help bouy up the other.
I have a setback myself. I wanted to look at your facebook photos, but I'm not on Facebook. I had set up a Photobucket account to share photos on and that site works with Twitter, Facebook, and I think MySpace. I don't do any of them, so when someone looked at one of my photos and asked a questions about it through Facebook, I find I can't answer her.
The best I could do was go back and edit the description of the photo by adding in the answer to her question. I hope she's gone back and looked at it again to get the answer. Otherwise, she probably thinks I'm a snob.
We looked into joining Facebook, but I felt they wanted too many questions about myself to make me comfortable. Perhaps I ought to sign up under a false name with a false birthdate and such.
Naaahhh. I don't think I could do that.
Good luck with all your upcoming work on your RV.

My wife and I have been on Facebook for about four years now and have never experienced any of the problems that a lot of people seem to run into. It's simple internet rules. DON'T click on links from people you don't know, and even if you do know them, be wary of the link until you see that someone else has commented on it. As for the privacy issues, the ads you'd see on the side are definitely geared toward YOUR personal preferences, so they definitely monitor your posts and probably your cookies, but so does google and just about every other site you might use on the net. It's really not a bad place to hang out. I love how easy it is to use and how much storage you get. My main account has about sixty folders of photos and still growing.
But I understand it's not for everyone, so we are looking into setting up a blog with either a photobucket account linked to it, or smug mug... something like that. I don't have any of my current photos stored anywhere else. Some of my "arty" ones are on Deviantart.com, but as the pertain to the journey, the facebook page is it for now. Soon as i get something else going, i'll post it.
Thanks for the very encouraging words. We do try our best to keep the support going for each other. Luckily, we're a very good team that way. :)

Well, things are going downhill. We are at a beautiful RV park/campground in Virginia, but the weather is very un-Virginia like. We took on this trip to escape the cold and I don't know if we're going to continue like this. Had we brought the camper, that would have been fine, but in this van, it's another story. Luckily we have a good heater that we purchased off another camper, so it's not cold in the van, but we can't be in the van all the time. One goes stir-crazy that way. The plan was never to venture farther than S.Carolina, but weather reports are that it's just as cold there. If this doesn't break soon, and normal Southern temps follow, we may call it quits until we can get the camper going. :(

I bet this is a bad winter to be in a van. We spent 8 months in a 26' class A - 2 adults, an 11 yo and a dog. Bigger than a van for sure, but really hard in the rain and snow. Became depressing. So know that we are thinking of you. Can you go more south? Or west? We are in NM and it is a very mild winter here. Pinon

No, not really. We had decided to only go as far as S.Carolina. That way, if we needed to get back home for any reason, it wasn't too far. Eleven hours tops. When our younges kids graduate next year, then we'll go further. Unfortunately for now, our plans are to return home and continue when we get our Prowler on the road. The van isn't bad as far as it being warm. We have a great heater that we bought for it. It's a bit cramped, and with nothing to do, you really do tend to get depressed. It's hard enough to be away from our kids, but if we were at least enjoying the things we thought we would be, it might be closer to being worth it. As it stands... not worth it at all. :(
Got back "home" yesterday. It was great to see all our kids and the family, but waking up in a HOUSE was so depressing. As cramped as the van could be, it was so comfortable, and the air was so fresh at the campground. We can't wait to get back to the life as soon as possible. Probably late February or early March. Thanks for all the support and well-wishes and great advice you've all given us. Happy Holidays to all of you. :)
