Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

HD Camera

I stumbled on someone's blog(cant remember who's) that had pictures taken with a HD camera.  The pics were of the mountains in MT and they were awesome!  Dont think they were edited in photoshop either.  They almost looked 3D.  I have an Olympus C60 zoom and it does a good job.  Have been saving for a Nikkon but now not sure.  I would like any info anyone can share. Thanks in advance.
Janice

Janni,

Do you happen to remember the blog where you saw the images?

There is a couple on RV Dreams where they (or at least one of them) is doing what is called HDR photography.  See their websites at the bottom of their initial posting at this link:

http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?aBID=91511&p=3&topicID=36999082

If what you saw was HDR, it is more of a process within software.  (I think it is anyway.  I've never done anything like it.  I don't like image manipulation myself.)

There is supposed to be a Canon camera that can do the HDR process within the camera, but if it is software within the camera where it is manipulated, it might be difficult to tell what is going on with the changes on a small camera monitor.

Here is a link to some information about that Canon:

http://gizmodo.com/5561208/canons-in+camera-hdr-patent-will-let-you-take-pictures-like-this

Otherwise, either a Canon or a Nikon is a good choice in cameras.  Personally, within our family we have 4 different Nikon cameras.  My wife, Jo, has one, one son has one, and I have two.

But, whatever you do, enjoy the photography.

Terry

Terry,
Thank you for your reply and YES it is Deb and Paul.  I used Photoshop(and not to alter any scenic pictures) after I scanned all my pictures in my stix and brix.  Works well when I put all my pics on flatbed, scanned, cropped, and seperated into files.  I have 6 totes full of pictures and info all on a 21gb stick now and dvd's passed to the family :)  Less baggage.  Anyway....Thank you and will have to do a little more studying as maybe it is not the camera I am looking for, but software.  Also glad to hear more positive about the Nikkons.

Do research prior to buying anything. From a consumer based product standpoint (not sure about professionals), the Panasonic and Cannon are as good or better and with a better price. In fact, I hardly, if ever, see a review where the Nikon beats either one of them.
I am sure this will turn out to be another Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge type debate.
The only point I am trying to make is that while Nikon was 'it' with old film 35mm's, the competition has reached and passed them in many respects in the digital age and you are not paying the premium price for a name.

Trying to keep this objective, I merely was expressing my happiness with Nikons.  In two cases, I have recommended other cameras to some of my relatives.  It all depends on what it is that the end user wants from their camera.  With my relatives, I recommended and they bought Kodak digital cameras.  Those cameras met their needs.

Having been a professional salesman and sales manager, I fully believe in knowing what it is that a customer wants before making ANY recommendation for either a brand or model.  While I am merely a serious, amateur photographer, I was more than willing to shell out $2500 for a camera and one lens. DEFINITELY not recommended for everyone.

As far as Nikon's standing in the markets and their quality, I will simply say that they are as good, if not better, than a lot of their competition.  I believe that one needs to look at the cameras themselves, and not necessarily buy a product based ONLY on the name.

For instance, as an advocate of nature and wildlife photography, I needed a camera that would be tough, and at least, water resistant.  For that reason, I was willing to pay MORE for my camera than I would recommend for other people.  However, I do agree that one needs to do some comparing.  Not only in the cameras themselves, but also in the "output" of those cameras.

That is why I like the website called "Pbase".  On that website, one can find images made with particular cameras or lenses and get an idea of how well they do in rendering images.  While a manufacturer's website will have sample images, they are usually taken by professionals.  Pbase is a photo sharing website with thousands of photographers, both amateur and professional, submitting their photos.  I have used it more than once to evaluate the images taken with different cameras prior to making a choice to buy.  If one is looking to see the photos taken with particular cameras, look for the link labeled "Cameras" on the Pbase home page.

With any photo sharing website, I must caution that some photographers post what used to be called "figure photography", so if searching on those sites, be cautious with children around.  (So much for the disclaimer.)

Point very well taken Terry and I agree with you, it's what best fits your needs! I was not trying to 'knock' Nikon, just point out there are others out there to consider based on what you will use it for.smile

Thank you much for sharing this information with me.  Think I will study up on that HD this winter.  I definately will consider all as I review before buying.  Not that money is not a factor but I want to step up and into something a little better than my Olympus.   I love taking pictures and want something that will express that.  Above all though, I can't get anything that is so hard to use that it frustrates me.
