Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. Chattanooga Camgrounds Near Battlefields

Next Spring I plan on taking my first cross country trip leaving Denver and traveling on I-70 to Delaware. When I head back to Denver I plan on making a side trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee to vist Lookout Mountain battlefield. I was wondering if anyone knew of any campgrounds close to Lookout Mountain that they could recomend.

Here are the RV Park Review listings for Chattanooga and it appears there are a number of highly rated parks.

I checked RV Park reviews website and it didn't tell me how close it was to the battlefield.

Google maps and a little work could probably narrow that down for you.

I don't know exactly where the battlefield is, but it appears that Lookout Mountain is only about 5 miles from Chattanooga. Just how close do you have to be? smile.gif

I probably would not have my car so it would have to be close enough to ride a bicycle.

Keep in mind that you can always rent a car for the day to see the sights. Just a thought.

Some companies will even deliver to your campsite.

We stayed in Chattanooga this past spring to see the Chickamauga Battlefield and Look out Mountain. For those interested in Civil War, I would say these are both 'must-see' sights. The national park visitor center for Lookout Mountain is literally on top of the mountain with a very narrow, winding access with very tight switch backs. This would be a very strenuous bike ride and one that would be hazardous due to the narrow road. If you are very athletic and experienced with the steep inclines of a true mountain ride, you'd still need to exercise extreme caution!

Once there, the views of the river and Chattanooga are amazing and there are hiking trails all over the mountain, if you're up for that.

There is limited parking at the visitor center. The park is within a residential area with neighbors that monitor parking very closely.  If you're there for the day, bring a lunch as there are no concessions or restaurants nearby.

We stayed at Raccoon Mountain RV park. I don't know the locations of other options for you.  This one may be the closest as it's on the west end of Chattanooga.  It wasn't one of our favorite parks by far, but it might work for you.

Totally agree with "retread" on the bike aspect.  When we visited last November, I was thinking "no way I'd bring my rig up this road!"  It is steep and curvy in a car!  The weather was perfect, btw.

I've been there several times - and it is indeed worth the trip - but a car would be almost a necessity.  There may possibly be some shuttles in the area, but I've never investigated it, nor do I remember seeing any.  But it might be worth looking into.  It would make sense since parking is very limited.  Chamber of Commerce should be able to answer that.

Lookout is beautiful, but the Visitor's Center IS right in the middle of a nice housing area.   I could see a campground waaaaaaaay down the mountain, in the curve of the Tennessee River, but do not know which one it was.    Although it was "Hot Wheel" sized at that distance, it looked nice.  smile.gif

We love Chattanooga and go about once a year for a long weekend.  We adore the Aquarium, and the downtown area too.

We spent a week in Chattanooga late November hoping to get in rock climbing and mountain biking, but it was way too cold most of the time. We stayed at Raccoon Mountain campground, which is satisfactory and close to Lookout Mountain. We found that the Camping World just south of Chattanooga offers full hookup camping. It would be central to Lookout Mountain, Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. The campground looked acceptable. I don't think there is anything close to Chickamauga. There is also a state park, Chester Frost, on the northeast side of town.

Raccoon Mountain proper is a TVA owned property that is open to the public for hiking and mountain biking. It is very pretty, but not of Civil War significance.

Enjoy!

hello, I live in Cleveland just north of Chattanooga and work out of chatt, lookout is a great place to see with rock city/ruby falls/ and all the civil war you could ask for but a car-truck- motorcycle is the only real way to enjoy these sites, the best camping we have found are the following:

Harrison bay state park great park right on the tenn river and a about a 20min drive to the above.

cloud-land canyon state park on the south end of lookout mt. another great must see

hails bar private owned (as far as I know) never stayed but have been for day trips. west of chatt.

all of the above have full hook ups and can handle big rv's depending on the time of year reservations would be a good thing to have as they fill up fast. most have web sites to check out.
