Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Howard,

I've started wayyyyyyyyyy  back at the very very beginning of your journal and am reading every single entry.  Really really helpful.

I'm up to September of 2006 and not too long ago (well 4 years ago actually) you were raving about your weather radio.  I've got one but have never liked it and am very interested in one with as you put it "that little button at the bottom to get the current weather report and forecast".   Sounds really helpful in addition to all the alerts it provides.  BUT, it appears Radio Shack does not have such an animal any more.

So my questions are:   Do you still have that radio and like it?   Is it a radio shack model or some other manufacturer where I might find it?

Hi Sherry,

Sorry I didn't see this question before now.  To be honest, I can't remember the last time we used our weather radio.

We haven't been in storm belts that much since we bought it.  But when we were in areas where we knew storms were coming you can bet we had it on, especially overnight.

Now, with that said, setting the thing after each move wasn't always the easiest thing to do.  You do want Same Area Message Encoding (SAME) so that you only hear alerts in your current area.  But programming it to your particular county or surrounding counties can be a hassle each time you move.

And if you don't have the settings just right, you can get alerts for all kinds of things - Amber Alerts, etc. that you may not want or need.  It's no fun to be scared awake by an alert that has no potential weather effect on you.  smile

I'm sure there are better weather radios on the market now.

Sherry, for what its worth we just purchased one in the Radio Shack in Kingston NY. I am sure most RS stores carry it. Gene

Once you get to places that have severe weather the radios are easy to come by. We picked up a Midland with battery backup and SAME codes at Wal-Mart in the Dallas area. They had a huge collection of them at that store.

We have a set of Motorola walkie-talkies that we purchased at Radio Shack that also have a weather alert feature.  They work great as walkie-talkies and the weather feature is really handy.  We don't have tornado sirens where we live, and several times last summer this Motorola unit advised me of a tornado warning in my area.
