Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
I am thinking of getting into metal detecting and was wondering if anyone packs a MD with them and what brand is their favorite?

Funny, I was thinking of buying one for my 21 year old son, so I did some research.
Take a look at this site, I found it to be very helpful: http://www.treasurequestxlt.com/detecting/index.shtml
I discovered there are many different types of MDs and some of them are quite expensive. You also have to be careful about where you look - private property can be difficult, and some places like gov't-owned land will allow you to look, however if you find anything, you have to turn it over.
Actually I was also thinking about using it, because we live next to the beach in a high-end tourist town!

Yes it can be difficult to find a place to hunt. And like most hobbies it can get expensive if you let it. I am looking to get an all around detector, coin & jewelry, relics, and gold prospecting. I have narrowed down my search to either the Minelab X-Terra 705 or the Whites MXT.

I too looked into it a couple years ago but never followed through with it. I'm curious to hear what you end up with and how things go. Keep us posted.
Yep, keep us posted. Georgia and I both don't seem to have any interest in metal detecting, but who knows, if you come up with some treasures that might just change our minds.
I googled metal detecting forums and checked out what people are finding, some pretty interesting stuff.
Also I figure it would be a good way for the both of us to get some exercise. I'll do the detecting and DW can do the digg'n.

We carry the Garrett Ace 250 and love it. We also have a pinpointer to find the really tiny things we come across. It is a lot of fun especially when you find something really neat.
I bought one of the $99 metal detectors from a local sports store. It worked for a while but I was never real happy with the quality of finds. Lots of junk metal stuff.
A friends has a Whites and it is very accurate. It will indicate whether the find is worth digging for. The only valuable he has found is his wife's ring. She lost it in deep pile carpeting. They had tried to find it for an hour and then he remembered the metal detector. Found it in less than a minute.
The prospecting show on OLN seems to lean towards the White product line.
I've watched them find gold nuggets in dried up river beds out in the middle of the desert with a Whites metal detector.
As soon as I have an extra $1000 burning a hole in my pocket, I plan to get a Whites. One guy we met in a campground, says he has found in a year of just detecting at campsites as they travel, over $86 in coins and a gold engagement ring with a 1 carat diamond.

I have a Goldmaster. Have had it for many years & would like to have a more updated model but don't want to spend the $$. It's fun to take boondocking, and I've found little things but not a big gold nugget - yet!
Tesoro, White & Garrett are all excellent brands. I happen to use a Tesoro and love it. I have 2 kids (8 & 10) and they love doing the digging for me when we get a hit :) Beaches are excellent places to go because they are easy digging and you find all kinds of nifty things (jewelry, money, toys etc.), plus no one hassles you about digging :) Late fall, early spring and winter are the best times to hit fresh or salt water beaches as there usually aren't too many people there. You have to be super careful with historic sites and private property as you can get in trouble pretty quickly there. Most campgrounds that I've been to don't seem to have a problem with it in your site or at their beach.
Generally, cheap MD's are terrible and cannot discriminate between trash and treasure. Stay away from Radio Shack and "store brand" metal detectors as they are very low quality (even the more expensive ones).
So far, we've found: Old Boy Scout Neck fastener, jewelry, money, horse shoes, sleigh bells, old license plate, toys (lots of match box cars at the beach) and assorted other trinkets.
There are also groups around the country that organize MD outings at historic locations were all the finds are donated to the local site museum.
There are usually 2 distinct types of MDing; artifact hunting (historic artifacts) and treasure hunting (jewelry, coins, etc.)
Oh and don't forget to fill in yer holes, it's proper MD etiquette.
Btw, this is my first post here, seems like a really great group of people :)
My wife and I keep a Minelab Explorer 2 with us all the time. I have owned several different detectors over the last several years from underwater, gold specific, coin shooters both VLF and PI. Garret, Whites, Fisher, Tesoro and Minelab. They all have great detectors and if you ask a sales rep what model fits the type of hunting you do, you will be well setup. We are going to get another one soon as I have had this detector longer than my Wife :) So now I have to share(the detector!). The addition will be an underwater PI from Detector Pro.
It really is a great hobby! I have found a lot of gold jewelry over the years (just turned it in for cash) as well as many coins and various other jewelry/relics. Excellent way to get out, exercise, have fun and make a little money if you put some time in.
Hey there Mike sounds like you some opion on medal detectors. I have pretty much narrowed down my choise to the Minelab X-Terra 705. Seems to be a good all around detector. What did it for me was that it has the multi tone option and seems to work better in salt water conditions over the the MXT. Since we will be traveling I wanted one that would work best in all terrains, and seems to be more newbee friendly.

Hi Ron & Sharon! The X-terra is a decent machine for sure! I used one out in a dry creekbed in AZ one year. Sure was nice and light! Seemed to have a lot of decent options too and decent depth. I am a fan of the MXT as well, I don't think you can go wrong with either. Personally, I am a bit biased towards Minelab just because I have really been impressed with the performance and build quality of the detectors I have owned made by them. I have liked my Whites too, but just not quite as much. No offense to any White's fans out there :) Truly I love them all, just have my preferences.
