Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
Today was to be (again!) our take off date. Well, here we sit in NJ with about 4 inches of snow and icy roads. We were to head south through VA and the Carolinas. They have it worse than us.
So, now we wait for the weather to warm and roads to clear.
To make matters worse, we tried retracting the slides last night to keep snow off the slide toppers. The slides will not retract. Being Sunday we can't call the dealer. Our unit is only 11 months old and we have been living in it since purchase. The last time we retacted the slides was in Sept. when we camped with friends over Labor Day.
Has anyone here had problems retacting slides if temps. are in the teens?
These kind of questions are often best answered by others with the same brand of RV. Are you a member of the Montana Owners Club, I hear they have an active forum.
Sorry you are being delayed, but you will remember this next fall when someone tries to delay you heading south.

Just got slides in. Was built up of ice. Len used neighbors leaf blower to dislodge. Now our main concern is highway conditions on US301 from Delaware, through MD to Richmond VA.
We will be sleeping tonight with slides in. At least with this rig we can get in bathroom, bedroom and refrig. Not stove though. That's okay. Daughter is making dinner. I'm just taking the salad.
VERY cold out - now about 20. Len is filling potable tank and emptying black and gray tanks. Also, chaining down generator in the truck bed.
We need to get to Walmart soon as I have a prescription that's been waiting for me since Friday. Then we will see how local roads are.
So, unless we get bad report on highway conditions - tomorrow it is!
Seems like I remember reading in our Montana owner's manual that when set up in place for a while (i.e. living in it), it is recommended that the slides be worked periodically... I don't remember the frequency it recommended, but I thought it was a bit much considering we would have to move stuff out of the way inside for the slides to come in. I figured at least once a month ought to do it. Better than nothing.
Of course, the cold temperatures had something to do with your problem, I'm sure!
It's been below freezing here and I've had ours opened up with the fireplace on during the day and the furnace on at night low but enough to keep it above freezing inside. And this is Texas, for goodness sakes!
You guys stay warm and safe. If you head out tomorrow, take it easy! You're full-timing, so slow is a good thing!
Cheers!

Try calling the Virginia State Police for any road advisories. I live in Virginia Beach and between Richmond and here got hit the worst. I haven't heard anything about the conditions on 301 but they usually clear it pretty well.
Watch the County Sheriffs (they'll pull you over for ANYTHING) and enjoy the Harry W. Nice Bridge (if it's windy, I'd delay). The shipping channel span rises pretty high across the Potomac River.

Looking at: F-350/Ram 3500 type truck, possibly an Airstream or a smaller 5th Wheel.
However, there is still time to change the configuration, just a plan.
I'd rather be safe than sorry. We're in North Carolina and I wouldn't be trying to navigate any of the interstates here either. Give it a few days to melt and it will make your trip so much less stressful. Whatever you decide, please be careful!
