Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Looking for Campground recommendations

We are planning on attending the Rally in South Carolina in April.  We would like to break the trip up into 2 legs.  We are in St Petersburg Florida and would like to travel about 4 to 6 hours each leg.  So we are looking for a good place to stay about half way.  That would put us somewhere in Southern Georgia.  Please let us know, we prefer State Parks or COE campgrounds.  We would stay in this campground for 3 nights - We like to bike, hike, kayak and general nature things.  Thanks in advance.

We like to stay at the Fr. McAllister State Park which is just South of Savannah GA. Sites are big enough for any size rig and they have water and electric hookups and a dump station.

Most of the sites are pull-thru so they're easy to get in and out of.

Greetings, John & Terri!

Jim is right on suggesting Fort McAllister.  The campground is wonderful, but for three days you may wish to take a day trip to St. Simons Island just east of Brunswick, GA.  Wonderful place to visit, things to see and eat, as well as visit the beauty and history of Fort Frederica.

The campgrounds near Brunswick range from nice to well uh, but no  federal facilities.  However, it is just a wonderful day trip from Ft. McAllister.

You will enjoy the rally and learn much from H & L!

So Jim,  did you mark any particular camp site as nicer then the others?  I know that's a habit we have.

You might check out Stephen Foster Florida State Park on the Suwannee River. It's just north of I-10 and just East of I-75 in north Florida actually on SR41. There are plenty of hiking trails, and canoeing/ kayaking opportunities in the area.

Speaking of Fort McAllister......

We're going to be in the Fort McAllister area in a week & a half. I looked at Skidaway Island State Park and at Fort McAllister State Park. Both got great reviews so it was a coin toss & I reserved Skidaway Island State Park.

Anybody been to both & have an opinion on which ones best? I've never been to the area so I could use the advice. We'll be in a 37' fifth wheel.

We stayed at Skidaway Island State Park over Thanksgiving.  It is beautiful!  We considered returning for Christmas/New Years, but must make a trip to Louisville, KY over that period.

I lived on the nearest island to Skidaway Island for ten years, and simply love the area.  Skidaway is a larger campground with more people, but much closer to other things to do than just biking, hiking and liking where you are.

Ft. McAlister is smaller and also very nice.  As I suggested earlier, a day trip to St. Simons Island near Brunswick is a must.  Both campground have wonderful walking trails.

We like the sites on the right hand side of the road as you come into the campground. (Across from the CG hosts). We prefer the view from these sites and have seen quite a bit of wildlife in this area of the park. (deer, raccoon, etc.)

OK folks, when I joined RV dreams I told you that I would be asking a lot of questions. Here is the deal.

My first solo trip from Miami to the rally. I am use to traveling up the middle part of the state from Miami and I know a few places to stop for an overnight. But I am a little unsure about this trip, hope you can help. I only need to stop to sleep and hit the road the next day.

I am going to leave Miami on Sat. April 3rd. I am suppose to arrive on Monday the 5th at Willow RV. This gives me two overnites. I don't like driving too much in one day, I like five or no more than six hours drive time. I can leave earlier if need be. What do you think I should allow, two and a half driving days or more? Next question would be, where would a nice easy pull through for the first night stop. I am thinking about between Daytona and maybe a little bit north of that.

The husband use to make all the plans on where to stop and I always did the driving. I need some suggestions.

Another to consider is Crooked River State Park in St Mary's, GA.

It would be a toss up between Skid-A-Way and Crooked River based on how far you would like to drive both days. Skid-A-Way would put you closer to Myrtle, but Crooked River might just be the halfway point for time enroute since you'll have to deal with getting around Tampa and Jacksonville.

I have been in both and they are nice. Crooked River will offer hiking, biking, canoeing (it's next to the water), creature watching, and there is a nice golf course with senior discounts within walking distance. Lotsa pull-thrus and shaded. 

I was there a couple years ago and it was only 30A service, but you probably won't need HVAC in April anyway.
