Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Gas water heater keeps blowing itself out, help

My gas water heater keeps blowing itself out when it tries to relight itself. Its approx 8 years old. I have replaced the thermal coupler two times. I have adjusted the air and gas flow (think). I believe I have the pilot light turned all the way up.

Winter is coming soon here in North Dakota....

Any ideas, suggestions or solutions on how to get the thing to light itself again once the thermastat turns it back on without blowing itself out with a loud poof? Its currently 50/50 whether it relites or not.

This is my first travel trailer.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Ron in Williston, North Dakota

Ron, if it's been a year since the last time the gas orifice was cleaned I would pull it out and clean it. Word of caution, do not stick anything in the small hole to clean it out. Tap it on something and blow air through it. Also check the burner tube and clean it as well. Hope this helps. Gummy

I am not an expert on water heaters but I have had a few of them to date. It sounds to me like your ignitor is not positioned correctly. If it is not in the correct position, the chamber will fill with propane before igniting. When it gets sufficiently full to reach the igniter it will poof and blow itself out. Then whether it will ever re-lite itself is a crap shoot. It would be a good idea to take it to a competent technician and have it adjusted or your poof might become a bang!

Ahoweth is correct. In the gas business it's called delayed ignition. A competent tech can determine if it's ignitor position or in the circuit board itself.

WOW...... that did it.... fixed it.... the pilot light was bent over out from beneath the gas injector. I used a screw driver to bend the pilot light injector over, prob less than a 1/4 inch..... now the sonofagun lites perfect. I can barely here a whoosh when it lites now. Before the loud poof wasnt sounding right.

I must have done this myself by sticking the long lighter up in there and bent it without knowing I did it.

Could not have done it without yall. You saved me no telling how much money. I nearly had a path worn out around the back of the camper to keep reliting the sucker. Cant tell you how frustrated I was.

But its working perfect now..... CANT SAY THANK YOU ENOUGH!!!!!!!

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!!!!
