Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Best 5th wheel for full-timing with two kids

What would you consider to be the best option for full-timing with two kids, 8 & 3?  The 8 year old isn't with us all the time.  We've been looking at Raptor toy haulers because they would each have their own little space in them.  But we are now looking at a couple cougars that we like the floorplans on.

Which would you suggest???

Thanks

In my opinion it would be hard for one to suggest an rv with kids to full-time in, but I think the more room the better and a toyhauler just might fit your needs.

Travel Supreme made some two bedroom fifth wheels that some friends with kids really liked. You might find one used since Travel Supreme is no longer with us.

Also look at some of the two bathroom units (one full and a 1/2 bath).

I don't remember the brand but it had two bedrooms the one in the rear had bunk beds on one side, a big closet in the center and a desk on the other side. Plus the 1/2 bath.

It looked like it would be perfect for kids.

At one time we considered a two bedroom unit but we would of had to throw half our stuff for the rv out, not enough carrying capacity for us. Franklin makes a rv that is large if they are still in business. The quality in some of the units we did not like.
Travel supreme makes a heavy unit.

Hi Tonya,

My husband and are are preparing to full-time with our two boys, although they are a little older (11 and 13).  We started our looking at bunkhouses, staying away from the ones with the extra bath because we did not want to have the added dump location.  Pretty much everybody has bunkhouse floorplans now, some have more than one - we liked the Keystones (Montana Mountaineer was a good one).

Then we discovered the toy haulers, and decided that the garage area really added flexibility -- storage space while travelling, living room space during the day, and a bedroom at night!  We really liked the Raptor -- I love the glass door to the garage space -- but ultimately decided on a Newmar X-Aire because we got a really good deal on the one we bought.  We originally thought we wanted the queen bunks in the back, but this unit did not have them, and since then we've decided it will be more economical to build a loft back there ourselves, and buy some Ikea Poang chairs for seating -- lighter and more comfortable than the available bunk that converts to a couch.  Only our 13-year-old is sleeping back there -- the younger one uses the loft in the living room.

We're looking at adding a 2nd small refrigerator in the garage, because that seemed to be the shortfall in most of the bunkhouse models -- nothing bigger than an 8 cu. ft..  The rig we bought has a 10 cu. ft. frig, and by taking the top shelf out, I can fit 3 gallons of milk, which is pretty good, but we'll probably still add something small in the garage.

Take a look at our blog -- I had a post in June when we first got the rig that has pictures of the interior.  Good Luck in your search!

Thanks for all of your help.  We are still undecided, and still trying to sell our house.  The house has been on the market for a year now, and it's just not selling.  I know that nothing is selling, but it still doesn't make me feel any better about it.  We are trusting in God though and I know he will make it work if it's his plans for our life.

Right now it looks like we might go with the Cougar.  I really like the Raptor, but it is about $30,000 more than the Cougar and I can't justify to myself that it's ok to spend that much more money when the whole point is to simplify our lives.  The Cougar looks like it will fit our needs perfectly.  I might check into the other brands that were mentioned though.
