Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Replacing TV in Motor Home

The front TV in my Monaco Diplomat needs to be replaced I think. It has sound but no picture. I've hooked up the cable to a known working TV and the satellite is fine there, so I'm guessing it's the TV.

Soooo, how do you get that thing out of there? There is a framework around the TV but the TV is just a tad smaller than the framework so I'm thinking that I must need to see if the two wooden screw covers on the bottom are probably holding the TV in place. 

Then, I'm thinking I need to find a TV that fits the space. Do I have everything covered here?

Can anyone think of what else could be wrong with the TV to save all this work? TV work has not been part of my skill sets!!

Hi Barb, how old is your Diplomat? Are your TV's digital capable? The choices are, fix the TV's you have or replace them.

If your TV's are the older tube type then I would seriously consider upgrading to flat panel TV's that won't require a digital/analog converter. If your TV's are already digital and flatpanel then I would call a tv repairman to see if they can fix it without removing.

A fellow workamper here just had to replace both TV's in his '06 Allegro Bus. He was unable to locate a new TV that would mount in the same place as his original. The new TV required them to build a new mount. Not a simple task...took 3 guys all day to get the job done. If you decide to replace your TV's I recommend you hire a professional to mount it.

We replaced both of the tv's in our motorhome without having to modify the cabinetry. They are tvs that work both as digital and analog, without the need of a converter box. Found em at Walmart, cheap!
They are still the full deep tube sized tvs, but we had the space there any how.

If the broken set is tube and not flat screen. I saw a friend had purchased a flat screen that covered the opening.  He mounted that on a bracket on one of the internal walls of the cabinet.  It would swing open to gain access to all of the storage room he had created by removing the tube type TV.

The MH is an '02 so I suppose the TV's are that old too. I already have the digital box attached to it for when I use the antenna. Otherwise, I use the DirecTV satellite signal. I'm thinking of trying to find a repair shop. I'm not into woodworking, etc.

Just a thought, if you mounted the converter box between the antenna and the Direct TV box, you most likely blew the tuner out of the TV. The Converter box has to be between the TV and The Direct TV BOX, I found out the hard way. Gummy

What type of shop would you take the RV to to get an LCD panel TV installed on the mount?  Car Toys, Camping World, or ???  I don't think we want to try it ourselves.  Both TV's are the old style and we have two new panel TV's to replace them but want it done right.

I took it to an RV dealer/repair shop. I had to get a new TV. Eight hundred some dollars later, it works.

I don't know who you went to, but he sure saw you coming. I replaced both my TV's for less than that. The front one is a 26" and the back one is 19". Both are VIZIO's, got them at Costco. I have to admit the old TV was one heavy sucker. But I'm sure you could have found someone to help. Sorry! Secured them in with Velcro.

I should qualify that amount of $800.

It was about $475 for the TV and wall mount, the rest was installation and debugging the satellite and DTV black box.
