Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Should the freezer in my Dometic fridge/freezer have ice in it?

I just opened it and there is a lot of frost and ice in it - like the times before they developed fridges that had frost-free freezers, or when you accidentally leave the freezer door open.

I noticed also that the freezer no longer hisses when it closes - I guess it did that before because it was sealing? That's what I was told by the RV salesperson.

Do I have a problem??

Hi Roberta,
Your freezer seal is usually a magnetic seal. If you accidently leave the door slightly open ice could form. If frost forms on the seal area it could cause the ice to continue to grow. Just clean the frost/ice around the seal area and the seal should go back to normal.

RV refrigerators are not self defrosting so will build up frost depending on the humidity in the area you are in and how often you open it. Also, if the fridge is old you may be getting some air leakage through the gasket.

To test the gasket seal, place a dollar bill at various places around the door and close it. If the bill slips out too easily, you have a leak at that spot. I've never done it, but I understand changing the gasket is not rocket science. smile.gif

We have to defrost ours about ever 2-3 months and a hair dryer makes it a 10 minute job.

You're going to be an RV expert in no time.
