Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
I need to take my 2004 Hitchhiker II for maintenance. There are a few items I know that need service, but I just want to be confident that everything works as it should, is lubricated & ready for use. The 5ver has been rarely used and sat in storage for a couple of years, so I don't really know how to ask for what is important. I also know that a service dept. will see me coming and grossly overcharge me for doing very little, as Keystone RV in PA did on my maiden voyage from NY.
I will be workamping in a National park this summer and will have water & sewer but no electric hookups, so I want to have the generator checked out. It was never used according to the seller. I also know of two electrical problems; I'm sure the wheel bearings have never been repacked, and so on.
What do I ask for, or how should I phrase it, to get the service I need? Maybe there is no good answer to this question, but I would appreciate your ideas on what is the most important. I can do very basic maintenance but not much.

Gypsy, If you have time before your scheduled service, go down to the dealership or service center and ask them about the services they provide for fifth wheels. Talk with the service manager, you should feel comfortable talking with him/her. If they try to tell you that you need something done before they have seen your trailer I would shy away. Prior to seeing it I would expect they would give you recommendations as to what may need to be looked at. Also check references, talk with the people in the waiting area, check with the chamber of commerce and BBB for complaints about the business. Hope this helps.
If you are going to be without electric at your site and you will have to run the gen some then I say it for sure should be serviced. I am not a mechanic by any means but I know that a motor has to have oil and should be serviced on a regular basis. Besides that the gen itself should be checked for proper output. If this rig has been setting up for some time I am sure there are many items that should be checked out. The folks on this forum will add to this. Don't rush into any service agreement till everyone has a chance to give you some advise here. We are a family and we take care of each other.
