I really want to build a custom RV that fits my needs (I also like the challenge since I have a background in metalworking/woodworking/equipment design and repair).

I've learned from design and prototyping that you are only limited by your imagination and fear of failure. The only way to move ahead is to take chances! The term we use for people that are always stating "it won't work" or "it can't be done" or "is it safe" is Analysis Paralysis! They can talk themselves out of taking risk by over analyzing EVERY aspect of the project! I tend to ignore them and move ahead to success more often than not.

One goal is to make the RV as "Green" as possible (i.e. off the grid) by incorporating the wealth of technology available now (solar, wind, regenerative braking, alternate heat and cooling, etc). If you like the stove idea you will like the idea I have to catch/use rainwater

It will cut down significantly the need to refill the water tanks!

That's actually a good idea. Except the part where you need a couple hundred pounds of wood laying around :p. Aside from that I like it!

I have been reading a lot of tiny home stuff. One heat solution that looked efficient and doable for RV use is the Kimberly Stove. These are used in marine applications- folks living on boats. I am not familiar with the biomass fuel it takes. Look on the website? http://rvdailyreport.com/news/id/16319/inventor-creates-wood-burning-stove-for-rvs I've seen others too that can use wood pellets or corn pellets. Can't remember the name right now. That appealed to me as I heat my home with wood pellet and it is so cozy. For the space you heat in an RV, a 40 lb bag ($5-6) could probably last a week in full-on winter.

I had a freind that stayed up in my camp in Northern NH for 2 winters he had a converted school bus with a wood stove for heat and hot water ...nice setup and was pretty efficient!!

Have you looked at the Tiny House movement? If you are customizing a small place with efficiency and imagination in mind (right on!), you will see some really cool (as well as really funky) accessories and ideas from these imaginative hands-on folks. Many good links too. Google 'tiny house' and see. Tiny House Swoon has some very cool pics too. That's where I came across the Kimberly Stove. There is a lot out there and more coming every day. When you finish your RV, they may feature it on the site!! Cheers.

Oh Geez, thanks Terry. I had not even checked the date on the entry.

PS love the name of your blog. It made me chuckle. I've seen my share of barkers :) I will stop by and check it out when I have some time. This forum is such a great resource. I could fritter away many hours catching up on all these threads!!
