The way I test toilet paper is to take a sheet and shake it up in a jar of water. If it dissolves immediately, it should be ok for the RV. When in the U.S. I use Angel Soft and in Canada, I use Cashmere. Hope this helps.

We are in our 9th year fulltime. We use regular toilet paper and alway have. We never have an issue. Anything that "melts" (breaks down) in water after an hour or so should be fine. We currently use Cottonelle, single ply.

BTW, you also don't need chemicals if you use your rig fulltime. Never use them, and never have issues.

Hi Breezy, we've used Scotts tissue right off the grocery store shelf, from day one. If you read the label, on the back it says safe for septic tanks and RV use. We haven't had any trouble at all. Zilch, none, nadda, zippo, and besides that, it's much, much cheaper. Good luck, Dave

I second what Jack and Dave said. We have used scotts from the beginning and that was two years ago and have never had a problem. We also do not use any chemicals. I do not know if any TP would be ok but scotts works great for us.

Breezy:

We have been RVing in one form or another since 1971 and have never used the "special" toilet paper. We use Angel soft which can be purchased at any Wal-Mart store. It is cheap and we have yet to experience any TP build up in the tank. Just be sure to use plenty of water when you flush. Your RV toilet will still use much less water than a house type toilet.

Angel Soft and no chemicals, no problems. Would that make a difference if boondocking instead of using campground sewer?

Quilted 2-ply Northern, Charmin, and the like with NO chemicals and never a smell or clog or problem. Just a nice comfortable TP experience and saving money buying what's on sale!

Have some fun with your kids doing an experiment. Have them gather a sample TP square from your neighbors, record the brands and disolve 1 square each in differnt cups of water. Have them time how long it takes to "dissolve." Makes a fun experiment and you will find the best dissolving TP too!

Then what keeps the odor down? Even with chemicals we notice a slight "odor" by the 4th day.

Sherri and I eat a bag of Spearment Breath mints once a week seems to help....

You may have to double up on your chemicals that you use...especially in warmer climates. We use a Powder that seems to work well and for the life of me I can't call the name of it. When the weather gets real warm we have to put more chemical in the toilet and it helps between flushings. If you can dump more often that would help also.

We use a product called Calagon its a water softner its powdered, found it at K-MARTS. Your bathroom smells just like a fresh power room.

We can't double up on the chemical we use because the smell of formaldehyde now is sickening. To double it up would make the toilet unusable. There were times I wish we could have dumped the black water sooner....... bleh

Gosh I hope you are not using formaldehyde in your toilet or rig. Just a small cup of Calagon is all you should need and only once a wk.

We use Calgon, and have a 45 gal black tank and use 1 cup. When the tank is dumped, I back flush with the valve closed for a short time and dump again and in most cases the water will be clear the second time. NEVER LEAVE THE VALVE CLOSED WHEN YOU LEAVE THE DOCKING STATION IT CAN BECOME A DIASTER. Also we do move to another location we make sure and dump the black tank and put on a little extra water in the black tank until we get to another location and then dump and flush again. Calgon is kinda hard to find. As for TP we use Angel Soft because its eash to find. We have a W/D and we don't close the grey tank valve when we are in the RV park. We have never had issues with our tanks. You must use lots of water when flushing. We do no boondocking and always prefer a 50 amp service and full hookups. GBY.......

I use an macerator when dumping my tanks. Back when we first started FT'ing we couldn't find the Scott's single ply that we normally use and ended up with some 3-ply quilted stuff. It plugged up the macerator within a week.

The point is, if you plan on using a macerator be sure to perform the test on your chosen brand of toilet paper. I use a quart jar half full of water and add 1 or 2 sheets of your toilet paper. If the sheets haven't dissolved in 2 or 3 minutes I would be looking for a different brand.

I met a friend the other day who has an HR Endeavor and his coach came with a macerating toilet. First time I'd seen one of those :) I asked why and he told me it's because his toilet is not located directly over his black tank. By using a macerator on the toilet they can install the toilet away from the black tank. But he said the toilet uses a lot of water to flush, not a good recommendation for dry camping.
