Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Campgrounds West of NYC

On previous trips up the east coast to Maine, we have found a lack of an overnight stop west of NYC.  Departing the DC area north on I-95, as we approach the Edison, NJ area, we veer west and then north around the city to cross the Tappan Zee Bridge back to the coast.

Five hours behind the wheel is doable, but in this traffic and even stretching it past six hours is arduous at best.

Without traveling too far west around NYC, we have found a lack of even just an overnight stop.  What are we missing in our CG search?  Any assistance from those more familiar with the area would be most appreciated.

Charles

Cut over to I-81 somewhere and then take I-84. That will give you more choices.

There's nothing close to NYC to the west. The land is just TOO expensive. If you can last till you get over the Tappan Zee, there's a lovely county campground in Croton on Hudson right on the Hudson River about 10 miles north of the bridge. It's called Croton Point Park and the number is (914) 862-529

BTW, for anyone visiting the city, this is a great place to stay. There's a train station right outside the CG that will put you in the middle of Manhattan in less than 1 hour and it runs almost around the clock.

Good luck,
Fred

This place is about 6 miles from Rt80 off of Rt15 in Jefferson. Nice county park! I think it is about 17 bucks a night. Electric is on all year, but water is seasonal. (not sure about the water at the dumpsite, but I think it is on all year) Very quite and peaceful.

If you do not like deer, and other small animals and birds, then this place is not for you. Too many trees for satelite, but none are in "dangerous" positions.

Thanks, Bill, Fred and Doug!

I very much appreciate your input, and, Bill, the cost of land in that area is out of reach for CGs.

I probably should have said we got off the interstates and stayed in Sussex Country, New Jersey where there are multiple campgrounds.

It is not west of NYC but there is a campground about 15 min from I95 in Newark, NJ. I am not near my address book at the time but you can Google "Liberty Harbor" to find their website. Not much more than a parking lot with full hookups plus laundry, but it is safe and convienent to the CIty (PATH) if you want to go. Decent places to eat in the area (walking distance) and a great view of the Statute of Liberty. Spent a week their last summer. Also a marina where a lot of "full timers" anchor for the summer. Happy Trails

Thank you so much, Pete

. . . for the lead on Liberty Harbor.  We have stayed there once, and unfortunately it was a weekend, and the bar or club was cranking.  We had hoped to find something like Croton on the Hudson which is a bit north of White Plains, but located even a bit further south than Liberty Harbor.

Our intention is to avoid the NYC traffic and cross the Hudson via the Tappan Zee Bridge.  I appreciate your effort.

Charles
