Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Toilet Question

How often do you have to replace the rubber seal in your toilet so that it holds water? It seems that we have to replace ours yearly. Do you do it yourself or let the dealer do it. Ours is a SeaLand by Dometic.

I have never had to replace mine in any of my rv's. But having said that I have had to clean them as they sometimes get buildup on them and prevents them from sealing. If you have to replace your's that often I guess I would ask if you use some type of regular toilet cleaner that may damage the seal. Or maybe your's also just suffers from buildup and you are prematurely replacing them. To clean them I just put on some rubber gloves  and use a piece of sos pad and just rub the sealing surfaces. If I remember right the sealand has the half ball shape. That is currently what we have installed (I just put it in a couple of months ago). What i took out was probably the Tetford which has the slide type seal. On the Tetford the seal is a bit harder and that was the one I would use the sos pad on. The dometic is a fairly soft seal and they are easy to replace so I would not pay someone to do it for you if you don't mind doing your own maintenance. Once you remove the bottom cover there will be some type of clamp or screws. Mine which is a 510 model is nothing more than a huge worm hose clamp. Should only take about 15 minutes to replace.

I thought I had to but I didn't have to after the dealer said he would have to order the parts and it would take several days, (wants money up front and if the wrong parts come -they're yours).

Being we had to go wee  wee , decided to field strip the unit and cleaned it up and all worked ok.

One thing I've found that if the unit stands for a period of time without use, you had best keep water in the bowl (don't let it dry out).

Since my husband just had to do this to our RV its a 2002 fiver and he did it himself as he usually can do most of anything that we need done.  We dont know when it was done last but it just wasnt holding the water like it should.

I should of added that the ring was the only thing that needed replaced not the ball unit, so we took it back to the rv store while in the Quartzsite area.

Hi Judy,

If that is the Sealand Traveler, the porcelain unit, I would think yearly is too often. I replaced ours only once in 4 years. If it leaks, the docs say to tighten the screws on occasion. Too pricey for more often than that.
