Bank Deposits

We belong to a credit union that is part of a network of credit unions. That allows us to make the same transactions anywhere in the country at an affiliated credit union. The only other option is to belong to a national bank that has branches in every state.

You get checks? Wow. The odd time that I get one, I usually just mail it to my branch. If I'm in Canada (I'm Canadian) I just go the any branch of the bank I deal with to deposit it.

On second read I see you said cash.......never mind my response.

when on the road we deposited our checks via our Smartphone. We downloaded our banks app (most have them) allowing us to do pretty much everything from our phone. You endorse the check, take a photo of the front and back and hit the confirm button and it goes in, usually takes only a few hours on a business day to see it cleared in your account.

Since we got to the point of leaving Oklahoma City, we switched all our banking over to USAA, since I am a veteran. With them, we can either scan both sides of the check on a printer/scanner and e-mail it, or we can take the photos like Phil and Rudee do and submit them that way. Jo can also access our accounts via her smart phone and check on balances or whether our retirement or Social Security direct deposits have been made. She can even transfer from one account to another on her phone, if needs be.

Another nice thing about USAA is that if we use our debit cards to get cash, USAA will reimburse us the fee that the disbursing bank charged.

I've never had anyone hand me a pile of cash - so I wouldn't know what to do with it either.

The few times I had some substantial cash, I just used it for fuel, or food, or amusements INSTEAD of the funds in the bank.

Spending the money from the bank funds or cash is the same. Source is not relevant.

Since we operate a business on the road while traveling, we do end up with some of those "piles of cash" at some of the art shows. Yet another reason we rarely post online exactly where we are staying, no need providing any temptation to the less than honest.

We bank at Chase and so far in the 10 Western States we travelled in, we've never had a problem finding a branch within a reasonable time. In fact the only state we couldn't find a Chase is SD where we are now domiciled, that figures.

One note, more of our art shows are in the larger city areas, Phoenix, Seattle, Sacramento, etc. If we know we're leaving the "big city" for some boon docking or rural camping, we make sure we hit a Chase before leaving town.

We deposit all checks, mostly checks we receive due to having a business, using their app on our SmartPhones, the only time we couldn't do that was when we sold my car after 2 month on the road, they had a limit of $2000 and we actually sold my car for a little more than that so we just found a Chase and deposited the check.

Why deposit cash - just use it instead of credit cards until it is gone. Or are you talking about a LOT of cash?

USAA has a "deposit at home" feature via your account on the USAA web site - you don't have to email anything (it can also be done with a smart phone). In addition, USAA now has an agreement with UPS where you can make deposits at UPS stores in many locations across the country. They have also recently introduced a network of ATMs that will accept deposits (via partnerships with other banks like they do for cash withdrawals). Unfortunately, the window where anyone (regardless of military service or not) could bank with USAA closed in 2013. However, if you are a veteran or a child of a veteran, you can open a USAA account. They are one of the highest-rated banking, finance, and insurance companies in the country.

There are situations when we have had much more cash then we like to carry, though it has not happened in a while. We just hid most of it and used it as much as possible until it was convenient to deposit it. If you need the money in the bank to use checks or do online bill payment, you might need to drive a ways to a branch. I would go the credit union route, they are friendlier than the big banks.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I am not talking about a lot of cash, but we have most of our bills auto drafted from our checking account. We need to make sure we have enough funds in there to cover them. Good to know that there are some banks with branches nationwide.

If I had large amounts of cash to deposit I would be wary of government agencies trying to link such deposits to illicit activity. Therefore I would use as much of it as practical as spending money for groceries, fuel, etc.. I would then buy a money order at the supermarket with any excess cash and deposit just what I had to pay bills with it through the mail.

I have had western union do wire transfers in large amounts before with no issue. Recently when I sold our dually pickup, the guy paid me in $100 dollar bills. Being in the oilfields of Texas, we had opened a savings account at a local bank, minimum deposit of $100, so we went to the bank, they ran the cash thru their machines for correct counting and checking for counterfeit bills, I signed a document the bank provided since the deposit was over 7k and that was it.

We also belong to a credit union and have frequently deposited cash in an affiliated CU. I think most CU are part of the network. You just find a large one you are eligible to join
