Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Diesel Fuel for 2007 Coaches

Hello All:

We are looking at a new 2007 diesel "pusher".  But, there is something that worries me.  I was hoping that the vast brain trust that is RV-Dreams could help find the solution.  Almost every gas station where I've stopped for fuel has a warning on the pump that says the diesel fuel at the pump is not adequate for engines in coaches that are 2007 and later (or some words to that effect).  Well, where does a person go to get fuel for a 2007 coach?  I'd hate to think that I'd have to stop at every diesel gas station at every highway exit until I found one.  That would drive me mad.

The person trying to sell me the coach says that I shouldn't worry about it and just use the fuel at the pump.  But, I have learned to take the word of a salesman with a grain of salt ... or two.  The absolute last thing  I want to hear from the manufacturer is "Well, we'd love to honor the warranty claim for your new engine, but ...".

I'd appreciate your feedback on this subject.

No worries with that coach. It is of the pre ULSD variety and hence will burn the LSD fuel just fine (and the ULSD just fine as it becomes the new standard).

Those pump stickers are somewhat misleading. Yes the standard applies beginning with the 2007 CY engines which must all be ULSD but your already built 2007 DP is still on a pre 01Jan2007 engine chassis. What those stickers should say is that this fuel is the LSD variety and can not be burned in a ULSD engine and leave off the 2007 stuff as these engines are really not on the road in any force, yet.

You can compare the LSD to ULSD diesel switch to the leaded to unleaded gasoline switch a bunch of years back. Remember that? The CAT engineers have clearly told me that you can burn LSD in a ULSD motor w/o engine damage ***BUT*** you will clog the particle separator (think this device like the gasoline catalytic converter) about 4x faster (normal life in an RV expected to be 250,000miles) and once clogged it must be serviced ($$$$$) and running after clogged WILL have disastrous engine implications. Sounds just like burning leaded in a catalytic converter equipped car eh?

What you will need to be aware of in the coming months is if you have a ULSD vs LSD engine. The U (ultra low sulphur/sulfur diesel) is the "new" requirement beginning with the 2007 CY engines. Hence, these engines are not in any coaches yet, as the manufacturers and chassis guys do have a "stockpile" of the current pre-ULSD engine chassis. Hence, one could surmise that we have several more months to place an order for a new DP and you'll still get the pre-ULSD engine chassis.

Both Canada and USA (lower 48) have adopted the ULSD standard which is being rolled out at the retail level as we speak. AK has a delay allowance so it might be harder to find there for just a little while. The biggie is Mexico has NOT adopted the ULSD standard so taking your soon to be ULSD DP south of the Rio Grande might not even be possible.

Kevin,

I live in North Idaho.  I began noticing the postings on the diesel pumps last summer that the fuel in these pumps should not be used for 2007 vehicles.  I wondered how long it would take for these stations to provide the new ULS fuels for the 2007 models.... didn't take long.  I cannot find a station in our area now that does not have ULS fuel.... can't find a station that has LS fuel... the switchover was swift and complete.  The new stuff seems to work ok with my 2002 powerstroke diesel, lost maybe a little milege, though very little.

........well maybe not that swift.

In this part of the country, I haven't found a station that IS pumping the ULSD.

We have fueled up twice on ULSD, once in Texas (Flying J just west of Houston) and once in Arizona (Maverik in Bullhead City).  It is all ULSD in California.  Cummins says no problems so far.

Your 2007 motorhome has a 2006 engine.  It might even have a 2005 engine since early year motorhomes are built on what the motorhome manufacturer had in stock.

A well documented "possible issue" once you start using ULSD if you have previously been using the old/current LS fuels is that there is a possibility that some fuel system gaskets and seals might "dry out" (from the lower level of aromatics that are refined out to make ULSD) and might seep.

It might be prudent to more frequently inspect your fuel system components (tank, fuel pumps, non-metal hoses, hose clamps, gaskets) after making the fuel conversion just to make sure.
