Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

New Owner of Nexus Phantom 28P - questions need answers to from other owners

Hello from a "new" RV owner.  Came off a 5th wheel to a Class-C Nexus Phantom 28P (no slides).

Have some question on this unit which hopefully some other owners here can enlighten me.

Basically, 3 questions right now, but maybe more later.

They are:

o Where is the water pump located and how to access it?

I want to be able to use the water pump to pump RV antifreeze into the system after blowing out the lines with air.  Always have done this with my 5th wheel.

o How to drain the fresh water tank.

Need to know this for dumping the fresh water when I know I am travelling to sites that have city water hookup.  Why carry the weight!

o Where does the factory put the GPS antenna for the optional Jensen radio NAV system.

The RV has a Jensen radio with the optional NAV104 feature available.  I acquired one of these and would like to install it and I am sure that Nexus had a location for the GPS antenna that was probably reliable.  Just need to know where its located so I can install mine there as well.

Answers to any of these questions are really appreciated as so far have not gotten any from Nexus.

Thanks in advance.

Hank Dozier

Hello Hank, welcome to RV-Dreams...I see this is your 1st post...

Water pump - When operating you should be able to hear it...follow the sound until you figure out where they located it.

Fresh water drain - If your rig has one it will be near the tank on the underside of the rig. All I've seen were blue and should have a pet**** valve.

GPS - If they installed the antenna it will be on the roof. The one's I have see look about the size of a hockey puck. I would head up to the roof and verify the antenna is installed, and if it is, pull the radio out of the dash and look for the cable/wiring.

If the owners manual does not contain specifics on these items I would look for owner forums specific to your make and model RV. They can provide a wealth of info about your rig. You can also contact the manufacturer of your rig directly and inquire about obtaining specific info about your rig.

Dan.....

Thanks for your reply. I may end up doing what you indicate for the water pump.

Have my wife run water or flush the toilet and follow the sound.

Fresh water drain is a little more difficult.  The bottom of the RV is sealed (and supposedly tanks heated from Nexus literature).

The only line I see coming out is in the dump valve area back adjacent to the external "shower" box on the RV.

This has a valve which I opened but I only got a few dribbles out.  Fresh water tank is 2/3rds full, so I don't think that is it.

I may have to siphon the tank, as it is under the bed in the back.

I am installing the NAV104 option myself, so no antenna to look for (its in the NAV104 box).  That is why I want to know where the factory would install it.

Only has 12 feet of micro BNC cable to make the run, so it must be somewhere that accommodates that run of cable, or they use a cable extender (if that works - signal loss issues).

No owner's manual that I know of for the Phantom 28P, and I have asked the factory about if there is one.  Only seems to be generic info on all their RVs.

I have contacted the factory but the lady I have spoken to doesn't seem motivated to be of help.

That is why I am appealing here.

Why don't you call Nexus? Their phone number is on their web site www.nexusrv.com

While recently staying in AZ we were parked next to a nice young couple who knew very little about their trailer. I think I was able to help them by showing them a few things about their rig and the most important is that manufacturers are very good at hiding stuff. There is only so much room and they are very good at utilizing that space...and they also do everything they can to save money (and weight) when they build things. The best advice I can give is to explore your rig. My young neighbor was totally befuddled when I showed him how to remove a wall panel in his storage area to reveal his plumbing from the hot water tank and how to bypass the HWH when he wanted to winterize his rig. He had no idea how his plumbing, propane, fresh water...was all plumbed in his rig. Granted, all rigs are different...but if you use some common sense and logic you should be able to figure out how your rig was built and where they hid everything.

We were staying in a large RV park in Buckeye. I had 2 neighbors who knew next to nothing about their rigs. Both of them had the rigs towed to the park since neither of them owned a truck to haul their rig. While I was able to help both of them with what I would call simple issues, I made sure before I left that they knew RV'ers love to help each other and all they need to do is ask for help.

Well, since my last post I have found the fresh water tank drain (for all you Phantom 28P owners lurking here, its at the very rear of the Black/Grey water dump compartment behind some plumbing going to the outside shower. I mean VERY buried. Feel for an oval faucet valve handle). This is the valve that previously only "dribbled" when I opened it for some reason.

Also have located the water pump and valves for winterizing as well. They are under the removable left side panel (defined as driver's side for US) located under the bed after you lift that mattress floor piece up. You then need to pull off this panel and there are the pump and valves. The other panel covers the electrical equipment including the charger/inverter.

This now only leaves where in the vehicle Nexus would locate a GPS antenna if the Jensen radio had the NAV104 unit installed at the factory. Still no answers for this from anyone.

I now have an extension cable for the GPS so I can locate the GPS antenna anywhere in the forward section of the cabin or roof once I find out where the factory puts it.
Or locate it myself next spring if still no answers.

Dan, I appreciate you trying to help. When I owned my 5th wheel, I also got used to assisting other RV'ers with locations and procedures to keep them going, as Michigan winters are cold and LONG....case in point is there is about 8" of snow on the ground here (SE Michigan) and its the 14th of November.

Glad I was able to help you some Hank. As for the GPS antenna...I'd say it's 50-50 chance that if you go up on the roof you find a spot labeled for the GPS antenna. I know on my rigs I found labels that showed where the pre-installed wiring was located for solar panels.

All the rigs I have owned it was easy to access the cap area, so other than fishing the wiring from the radio up a wall you should be able to simply install the antenna on the roof. Location of the antenna is not a main concern, so if you do it, pick a spot that makes it the easiest on you for installation. I would recommend installing on the roof, but you could try putting the antenna on the dash and see if it can "see" the satellites. Some class-C's the over-the-cab part does not cover the windshield so you might be able to put the antenna on the dash or even the roof of the cab.

Dan.....

No dice with a pre-marked spot on the roof for a GPS antenna.
Also, the cap extends fully over the windshield so it might not be the best place.
So I am thinking that the forward roof in front of the front vent may be the place to locate it, and snake the co-ax into the interior through the vent cutout.
From there route it out of the way to the cab and down an A-pillar to the dash and over to the NAV104 GPS unit.

The Phantom 28P does have an area closed off in front of the cap bed, and I do wonder if it is there.
There has to be an antenna for the radio SiriusXM installation, and as I do not see that on the roof either, I am thinking its in the cap front behind the front "bedwall".

The RV is now in storage for the winter, with a full cover over it and all batteries, etc. removed, plus all tanks drained and lines flushed and RV antifreeze in them.
So I will be looking at performing this task in the spring once the weather gets nice enough to uncover and de-mothball (literally).

In the meantime, will still look for any info I can find on this issue before I take it out of storage.

Hank-

If you are on Facebook, you can join a group titled "Nexus RV Owners Group". We have a 2018 Bentley and other owners in that group have been very helpful when we've had questions.
