Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
After lots of research, looking, questions - mostly here - I've finally bought an RV:
it's a 2000 Winnebago Chieftain 36L DP. Normally I'd be concerned about the age, but it's in really good condition. I'll replace all the tires ASAP, though, and have the engine serviced and given a look-over. Now I just have to read everything in the fat case of books and documents about how it all works!
For now I'll use it for attending Spyder rallies and maybe other rallies as I get to know other RVers. (When/where will the next Dreamers rally be?) After my Pa is now longer with us this will become my full-time home.

Guys read manuals and instructions too. Looks clean, hopefully it requires little (relatively speaking) to bring right up to snuff. So you will add your personal touches... home on wheels sweet home on wheels.
That is a very nice looking 2000 motor home. There will be things that will fail, but don’t be discouraged, it happens to brand new units also. Eyes wide open is the best point of view and this means that you have an 18 year old rig ... everything in it is also 18 years old ... stove, refrigerator, electrical system, engine, transmission, brakes, etc. you get the idea. That is why I said don’t be discouraged. Expect that there will be some money needed to keep this beautiful older rig in tip top shape. Keep a good positive attitude and you’ll enjoy the experience. Congratulations on your choice ... no kidding, it is a beauty!

Sweet! I just bought a similar aged unit for full timing, but mine is a gasser.
Are the steps supposed to stay out with the door closed? Mine retract when I close the door.
I see it doesn't have a tag axle. Did you see what its carrying capacity is? All the single rear axle units I looked at didn't have enough CCC for FT use for us, but I guess a diesel is different. I didn't look at any diesels as they were out of my price range, plus I had trouble with a diesel truck (Ford) so wanted to avoid them. That Cummins in your rig should last a lifetime, as long as you keep it maintained.

I haven't read the part of the manual about the steps, yet. I know they retract when I drive it, though.
As for carry-capacity, I doubt it will be a problem since it's just me, my little dog and my Spyder. I wan't particularly wanting a tag-axle. It would carry more weight, but could be a hindrance in some situations, not letting the drive axle have enough traction. Maybe a remote possibility. Anyway I don't think I needed that.
Thanks to all for the well-wishes. I just put six new tires on it this week, and will have a diesel mechanic service it next week. In the meantime I'm studying.
