Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
For many years we had a TT and used an 'astro turf' type mat outside the trailer. We recently purchased a new 5th wheel and would like a larger mat, not astro turf.
I've been looking online for a new mat - but it's hard to determine the quality of a product. What type of outdoor mat/carpet do you use? How long have you had it and did it hold up well over time? Also, beyond Amazon.com and Camping World, are there any other reliable sources for outdoor mats?
We carry and use one of the large mats from the RV section at Walmart. Our current one has been in use for three years (full-time the last year) and is holding up well and is compact to stow and carry. We also carry a door mat size mat we got at Lowe's that we keep at the bottom of the steps to clean our shoes on (it goes on top of the Walmart mat). It's been a good combination for us.
Rob

We got our mat from Amazon. It is about the same size as our awning. It has worked great for the past 2 years but is starting to disintegrate (?)overall. We accidently got a couple small holes and those areas are ok, but it is they typical one you see made of "plastic" weaving and is just starting to degrade a bit. I notice it when I sweep. It was about "90. The almost identical one at Walmart was quite a bit cheaper, but smaller. Looked to be same quality. We'll order another from Amazon because we can get a larger one that we can't get at Walmart.
We started with an indoor/outdoor carpet that I loved but it took up a lot of space because it had to be rolled rather than folded. We then purchased an RV mat at the Quartzsite RV show and although it folds up smaller started showing wear and tear immediately. If I have to replace it, I think I will go back to indoor/outdoor carpet even though it's a pain to find a place for it.
A lot of campgrounds won't let you use actual carpet because it kills the grass. Have to use the campsite friendly RV mat that looks like a plastic type of woven screen material. They breath and allow the grass to continue its life.
We got ours from a place in FL…it's made of the same material that the sun blockers that hang off the awning is made out of. Can't remember the name right off the top of my head and a quick search through my files didn't find the receipt…but I'm pretty sure I got the recommendation from the forum here…so maybe somebody remembers the name. Paid something like $80 or so for a (guessing, I didn't measure it and without the receipt I have no idea of the exact size) 10x20 size mat.
