Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

North Carolina's Outer Banks Scenic Byway

Hi All,

we are in the very early stages of planning our big USA OE (overseas excursion) and want to know if anyone has driven the Outer Banks Scenic Byway?

How long would you expect to take?

Are there many places to stop with an RV?

Can a RV even drive this road?

Is this a road even worth doing?

Thanks in advance

Rich, Emme and the bump

If by Outer Banks Scenic Byway, you mean Rt 12 that goes from one end of Outer Banks NC, yes - you can drive it top to bottom. Take the ferries if you want. There are CG's there. We've stayed in Waves at a CG called Ocean Waves, ocean is right across the dunes. Beautiful! We've also stayed at Sands of Time in Avon. It's a Passport America park, nice enough but a bit tight for our 40' 5er. We did stay there, just have to be careful.

Hope that helps!

Hi guys, glad to hear you are continuing to plan your big US excursion.   I haven't "RV'd" the Outer Banks yet, I can just answer your question 'is it even worth doing'.  Heck yeah it's worth doing!  It is a magnificent stretch of barrier bar islands, much of which has been preserved from being built on.    Late April and May might be your best time to visit, it is hot in the summer and there can be jellyfish swarms then too.    Only reason to skip it is if you don't like beaches and don't like swimming!

Ok, just reread your post. Didn't answer a lot of what you asked.

As far as how long it would take, I don't know off the top of my head how long Hatteras Island is, but I can tell you Rt 12 is a one lane each way road and the top speed is maybe 55 for half of it, the rest is 35, some areas less.

Are there a lot of places to stop with an RV? Guess that depends how big the RV is. We have a 40' 5er and there are not a whole lot of places to stop. There are beach access parking lots that we can get into but if it's summer and busy - probably won't want to.

Is it worth doing? OBX is one of our fav places. We have been there many times, and will return again I'm sure. Hatteras National Seashore is unspoiled and wild and beautiful. Personally, I wouldn't just drive through. Stay awhile. You won't regret it.

Thanks guys this will now be on our itinerary. We love beaches and swimming and we will definitely be stopping for a few days in couple of places. Just googled Hatteras National Seashore, looks impressive and looks like I can get the rod out also.

Our RV won't be anywhere as big as 40ft so we should be fine.

Only 22 months (ish) to go go before we start the OE..........
