Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Oh, My! The Millers are Going to Move

Yeppers...

...we've been full-timing in our fifth wheel now for almost 5 years and are about to make our SECOND move.  This time, we are moving from the Colorado Springs area at Mountaindale Cabins and RV Resort to a working position in Southwestern Oregon near Grants Pass, Oregon.  See Opportunity in Southern Oregon

While it is a volunteer position, we will be able to save several hundred dollars per month by taking this opportunity, mostly because the RV site and utilities are free, including Direct TV.

We are excited about this as it will let us get back to that area of the country again after about 40-some years.  The year's commitment will allow us get around Northern California, Oregon, and perhaps Southern Washington and let me take a bunch of pictures of the rocky coastlines, redwoods, and at the least, Crater Lake.

By the way, at that link above, you'll see where I described some about the job.  They are still wanting one more couple.

Terry

So when will this happen?? We will be heading north in June, would love to see you again. Love that area of OR, we've spent time there several times at Valley of the Rogue State Park. Best pizza in the area is Kaleidescape Pizza in Medford☺

Ruth,

Tentative plans are to leave Colorado Springs around April 14 and head off with two days to get to Mountain Home, ID where we have relatives.  Spend a week to 10 days there and then another couple of days to get from there to the Cascade Mountain Ranch Retreat around the 29th of April.  So, our move out date is just 2 months away.

The odd thing of this, is that we used to have family in Grants Pass, so we may get to see if any of that family's kids are still in the area and if they had ever heard of them Okies from the Panhandle that were related.  In 1969, when I was stationed in Northern California (near Petaluma), Jo and I took a week's leave and went to Grants Pass to see my uncle and aunt and one of their sons and his family.

I'm already researching to see where I want to go and take pictures.  One place for sure is the Painted Hills that are kind of north-central Oregon, and then there is always Crater Lake and the Rogue River and the coastline of Oregon and Northern California.  I think my "shutter-finger" is already starting to twitch.

This place is just about 10 miles North of Grants Pass and about 2 miles east of I-5.  Oddly enough, I think there is also an RV park right at that intersection of Jumpoff Joe Creek Road and I-5.  Jumpoff Joe Creek Road is the road off of I-5 to get to Cascade Mountain Ranch Retreat.

Jo and I would both love to see you and Dale again.

Definitely - “Alert the Media!”

We’re glad you are going to move and put a few miles on the rig.  A new adventure we trust will go well.

Enjoy the “tow” and the new surroundings.

Congrats! We will already be a bit further north by the 29th of April, so we won't be able to match up.

Yes, that area has lots of photo ops. You will love it.

The dates will likely change.  We were talking with Carol at Cascade Mountain Ranch Retreat and she said that the last of the couples that they have will leave by or on the first of May.  So, we've decided to advance our schedule to leave Colorado on March 30 and arrive up there about mid-April so they can have time to do a quick training job on us for the duties.

Having just purchased diesel for $1.55 / gallon, it just occurred to me that Terry and Jo would pick the time to move when diesel was at the lowest cost in who knows how long.  Nice planning.  LOL

Dear Terry and Jo,

We don't talk often but I always follow your posts as you know. You are living proof of my old dads saying "Nice things happen to nice people, but nicer things happen to the nicest people." You guys are the nicest people on this forum if there was an award for such a thing and I know this move will reward you for all the kindness you have shown us all. The owners and guests don't know what a treat they are in for over the next 12 months. Keep well my dear friends, don't exhaust yourselves doing good deeds and publish lots of photos for us to enjoy. From that bloke in the little Island down under.

Terry, I've followed you for several years and thought that we might make it out through OK. to stop and see you. Then you moved to Colorado. Now you are moving further away. I suppose if I make it out that way sometime you'll move back east. LOL

As I said in a previous post. Keep us posted as to how things are going and what you're doing. God Bless

 Dave,

While we might make it back east, it will only be for short periods of time for the most part.  While there are some areas in the east I'd like to see, most of what I like seeing is out west.  Since I was a little tyke, we generally vacationed out west, with a couple of trips to Indiana to see family.  Other than that, when I was in the Army, I was stationed near Boston, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C. and got to see some pretty country when on passes.

As for long term stays, unless there is really a whole lot to see in the east, I'll probably stick to the southwestern and western U.S.

Darwin,

We've been there.  We have family in Mountain Home and Boise, ID, so in the last year, we've been up there three times, although one was for a funeral and we didn't do much sightseeing.  We've driven up north of Boise in the Cascades and back towards the Twin Falls area.  We got to see the Minidoka National Historic site, which is one of the WWII Japanese internment camps, Shoshone Falls, and the Thousand Springs area on our first trip.  On our last trip, I got to see Shoshone Falls again, EBR-1 (first nuclear electrical generating facility), Malad Gorge State Park, Three Island Crossing (of the Oregon Trail), some of the Oregon Trail, and south of Mountain Home to see Bruneau Dunes State Park and Bruneau Canyon.

We originally had plans to go up in the summer of 2017 and take our RV and spend the summer traveling around Idaho.  Jo's cousin up there has a motor home, so we considered traveling together.  However, this job opportunity will likely prevent that happening next year.

Ha!!!  Like I've been doing a good job of posting on the blog.

However, friends and family back in Oklahoma just chastised me on our last trip down there (last week) about not doing much and showing them pictures of where we've been.  So, now a friend online has raised the specter that Terry is lazy.

I'll try to get more posted, which will include some of the pictures I took in Idaho.

Another slight change in plans, but mostly in timing.  We've been watching Accuweather online (Jo's checking about 3 times a day) to see what the weather will be like going across I-80 in Wyoming.  Latest reports show that snow is predicted somewhat for the 30th and 31st of March, but Sunday, March 27 and Monday, March 28 appear to be pretty clear and fairly warm.  So, we've advanced our schedule of leaving Colorado by a few days and will leave tomorrow, Sunday.

We still don't plan to be in Oregon until mid-April, so this will also let us spend some more time with family in Mountain Home, ID.  Oh, and Jo has been on Facebook and we do have relatives in the area of Grants Pass and Medford.  That's great news because we haven't seen them since 1969.

We are currently looking out the window at about 5 or 6 inches of snow on the ground, so Colorado is giving me one more look at beautiful snow blanketing everything.  However, looking at things online, primarily weather reports and even traffic cams of I-25, the roads appear to be in pretty good shape.  Our biggest issue may be the 2 miles from the RV park to Colorado Highway 115.

Safe travels Terry, I think the Fergs (aka Fergizmo, Allen and Donna) are in Mountain Home for a day or two on their trek to WA. Not sure if your time will overlap or not, we also have other RVER friends who passed through there last night who woke up to very cold temps this morning, so stay warm☺

Drive careful and keep a watch on that weather. You don't want to be driving in snow. Take you time and enjoy the trip.

Been a long time since we first conversed when we stayed at the Council Road RV park in Oklahoma City back in 2009 on our way to Branson MO. About all I remember was the tornado that sideswiped the airport and scared the you know what out of us.

Glad to hear your finally gonna hit the road and do some traveling. Enjoy and be safe out there...

Sounds like an exciting opportunity and you're very wise to avoid driving in that weather.
We loved the Crater Lake area and the little town of prospect. There are like 10 waterfall hikes in the area and some cute restaurants!

Terry and Jo,

Congrats on the move and as others have said, safe travels.  Sounds like it's a beautiful area.  Hope to make it up that way next year.

It was great having the opportunity to meet you guys in the Springs.

Take care.

Just as an update, we arrived in Grants Pass yesterday.  We saw things happen, providence likely, that delayed us leaving Mountain Home, ID by one day, but that one day let us get across Oregon and into our place in between snow storms that hit our travel routes.  That day of delay kept us on dry roads and easy travel.

We also had "misfortune" that ended up being a blessing as well.  When we left Colorado Springs on the 27th, we got to Cheyenne, WY and fueled up.  However, as we turned west towards our next fuel stop in Rawlins and an overnight in Rock Springs, the F450 developed problems.  The truck started "dogging down," which only let me get up to 50 mph in the good stretches, but down as low as 30 mph going up and over Sherman Summit east of Laramie.  We decided to stop in Laramie for the night since they had a Ford dealership there.  As we got close to Laramie, one of the big electronic signs over the interstate said that there were 75 mph winds on west of Laramie, so stopping let us avoid those winds.  The next day, we took the truck to the Ford dealer, and I told them that I thought the problem might be fuel filters.  They told us it might be late afternoon before they could give us an idea of just what was wrong with the truck.

However, at 10:30 am, they called to say the computer didn't come up with any error codes, so they also suspected the fuel filters, but they also found a leaking housing on one of the filters and a crack in one of the turbo hoses.  They also said that it needed a new air filter, so we told them to fix all those issues.  By 1:30 pm, they called and said the truck was finished, so we went and got it and decided to hook up and get on out of Wyoming.  We left Wyoming at 3:00 pm and pulled into Brigham City, UT about 9:00 pm.  Jo had rescheduled our Rock Springs overnight stay for Friday, so she called the next day and let them know that we had to cancel because we wanted to get out of Wyoming before the forecast storm came through.  The lady at the KOA in Rock Springs told Jo that it was a good thing as they had gotten 5 inches of snow in 3 hours overnight.  We had just dodged that bullet as well.

When we got to the Cascade Mountain Ranch Retreat yesterday, it tested my mettle of maneuvering the truck and trailer to get it backed into our site.  I'm definitely glad we don't have an RV that is over 38 1/2 feet long.  Now, we go through a couple of weeks of learning what to do here before the couple that is here leaves in a couple of weeks, then it looks like we will be on our own as the hosts.  We're looking forward to some new experiences, plus saving a bunch of money each month.

Terry
