Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

How often to defrost freezer?

I have a Dometic RM1350 (not a residential model though).  I seem to need to defrost the freezer about every 2 weeks, as the ice build up on the back gets to be about 1/8".

Is it normal to have to do it this often?  If not, what should I be looking for that could be causing it to frost up so quickly?

Thanks!

Your door might not be sealing well. Close the door on a dollar bill, moving the bill a few inches and see if you can pull it out. Where you can pull it out, the door is not sealed. You can often fix the seal by pinching it and using a hair dryer on low heat to make it poof out. I think the Fergs had some success here - http://fergizmo.blogspot.com/2015/08/smoky-washington-idaho-dalton-gardens.html

We defrosted ours about twice a year, but the ice buildup was way more than an eighth of an inch. I'm not familiar with Dometic's but you can probably purchase new seals for the doors if you do Bill's test and find them unserviceable.

Cheryl - we have the same model, and my defrosting schedules depends on where we are. I find that in more humid climates that the frost builds up more quickly. On average when we are in Western WA I'm defrosting the fridge monthly, in AZ in the winter I can go 2-3 months between times when it needs to be defrosted.

I ran into this once on a friends MH  the ice tray when filling was leaking water . I suggested shutting down the ice maker  and  they went from defrosting every 2 weeks to every 3 months
