Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Considering buying a used 2005 Winnebago Journey diesel but odomoter is inaccurate

I wrote on here before re: buying a used diesel or a new gas and y'all were very helpful!  We test drove the diesel and loved it but it ends up the odometer had been replaced so it currently reads only 7000 miles.    The dealer said they can provide documentation showing the ECM reading with actual milage on the engine.  Is this trustable?

We would be the third owner of this MH according to a carfax report.  First owner had it for 10 years.  Second owner for 3 months.  The dealer claims the second owner loved it so much they traded it in for a newer model.   Within that 3 months of the second owner having it was when the odometer had to be replaced.

In your opinion, is this sounding too sketchy for a $70,000 purchase?  (Last we heard the latest ECM report had it at 44,000 miles).

Thanks in advance for your input!

If the ECM hasn't been changed it is dead accurate. There is a lot of other information available in the ECM as well. Actually, 44000 miles is barely broken in. 4000 miles a year average sounds about right for a MH. I wouldn't eliminate it from consideration.

Mark....are you saying an ECM can be replaced and therefore not have accurate milage?

If the ECM is original to the engine, therefore the coach, it-Mileage- will be correct. Have the dealer run the serial number of the ECM and Engine/coach. They should be linked-same showing that they are original to each other. On a Cummins diesel, any Cummins shop can run the numbers on their computer and tell you if its original or not.

They are correct .....the ECM stores mileage for the odometer......the odometer is nothing but a display unit.....if the odometer is an analog type the mileage is still true in the ECM even if the ECM has been changed.......not saying it doesnt happen but in order to program a new ecm the miliage must be transfered over by law......also the previous owner only owned it for 3 months.....the miliage was recorded on his title when he purchased it..... witch would be on the title he is holding now durring the sale.......easy to figure it out from there

As Lucky Mike says, they are required to program a replacement ECM with the correct mileage, so it will be accurate. We have had an ECM replacement.

Ask the dealer if you can talk to owner #2. I would believe if all is well owner #2 would say so. He wouldn't be the first buyer to try the RV life style in an older less expensive rig.

Thank you all so much for your feedback! Your tips and knowledge are very much appreciated. We asked for proof that it's the original ECM and if we can speak with the previous owner. We will take it from there. Before buying, however, we are also taking into consideration of when/if we resell it, the hesitation OUR potential buyers might have. I never thought this would such a tough decision!! I tell you...we loved the Jayco

the person was asking    a reasonable question and not looking for  a most  unreasonable reply like yours.  Ask the dealer to supply the names of the two owners, contact them and confirm the mileage, pretty simple

yes the ecm is believable assuming it was not changed although if the ECM was changed that's also traceable
