Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

New and Preparing For 2019

My husband and have been tossing around full time RV living for the last couple of years.  We have now set a time frame to hit the road.  Our goalie to take two years to see the United States.  We have traveled quite a bit but have so much more to see. 

i am 56 and hubby is 53. Our goal is to retire at 60 and 58 yrs of age.  Have ran the numbers many ways and this looks like the ages we can be and live comfortable financially.  Since we have already moved our retirement date up two years we dont think We have move it much more   

We have been camping for the past 8 years and love the life of camping.  We currently own a 2015 Jayco 34RSBS which we own outright.   We have gone from weekend traveling to currently being a seasonal camper on Cape Cod.  We take very good care of everything we own and are thinking that we may use our current camper for fulltime camping.  We will purchase a new truck in the next year and will make sure that it can pull the camper.   Our goal will be to have it paid off before we retire in May of 2019.  

We will sell our house in the next few years and have actually began to get the house ready.   Am also trying  to get rid of things we may not need.  I know it is early but we want to get the most we can for the house.  

Our biggest  expense in retirement will be health care.  We have decided not to let this hold us back.  

Is is it to early to start planning?????

This is the perfect time to start planning. We started in about 2008. We went through several iterations of RV configurations before we arrived at what we bought. It will be several more months before we become full time and we feel like we could have done more preparation. However, our Smart car will be paid off in a couple of months, the tow vehicle is paid for and the fiver is getting there. There is a ton of research that you need to do to determine how you will live, what you need and what you don't. Take all the time you can to feel your way through the maze. There is no right or wrong way to do this, only your way. The folks on this forum will be happy to share experience and opinion to help you down the path. Good luck.

We are targeting for 2019 as well. I'm glad we started planning early. It allows us to spread out the to-do list over a few years. There is a lot to learn and the planning/research is interesting. We also changed our spending habits. We don't buy anything we can't sell in four years, or give away or use when we go fulltime. Lots of other benefits to starting early.

Only thing I would advise is to keep the current truck as long as possible and save for the new one. That way you have the newest truck possible when you hit the road. Either way, the new truck gets paid off.

MarkS - Thank you for serving in the USAF. I was in the USAF for eight years.

mds1 - We will have to follow each other to gets tips together. While 2019 seems far away I know that it really isn't.

Diana and Jim - Great advice on the truck. We currently do not have a truck but are not in a hurry. We are seasonal campers so the camper is in one place foe the time being. We have been putting money away for a truck for awhile now. This will come out to a nice down payment.

It's never to early to start planning. It helps make the time go faster and you just might find yourself speeding up that timeline...you never know. Once we started making decisions based on the idea that we would be fulltiming things became much easier.
