Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Help! The fridge door just fell off

Wow, I opened the refrigerator door and it fell into my hands.  Top corner of the door, where the pin that the door pivots on inserts into the plastic, just broke off.  I've attached a picture below.

<>

I spent the afternoon calling around to see if we can buy a replacement door but since its a 2007 model, Dometic says it's obsolete.  I looked all over the internet and so far no luck.  I called a salvage company in MO and still no luck.  I think we're going to have to try to glue it back together and hope for the best.  We thought we would use superglue and gorilla tape but I'm open to suggestions.   I sure don't want to replace the entire refrigerator if the glue doesn't hold.  This fridge has been better than any other that we've had.

If anyone has any ideas I'd sure welcome them.

I would put a aluminum plat on the top, flat plate aluminum at Lowe's about 1x1/8 inch wide plate, lay it on top and put countersink screws and countersink the plate so it will lay flat, use stainless sheet metal screws so it does not rust" you can drill a hole where the pin goes.

Thanks Lonney.  We're heading over to Lowes tonight to see what we can find.  I like your idea.

Judy:

I would suggest calling Leon Herschberger at National RV Refrigeration - (260) 768-7059  http://www.fixyourfridge.com/

Howard and Linda and we have had work done there.  Leon has a lot of units he keeps around for spare parts in addition to rebuilding / replacing cooling system.  Worth a call to see if he might have a door.

Thanks Bill.  We've been working today on fashioning an aluminum piece (as Lonney suggested) to fit the top of the door and I hope that once finished, it will hold at least for the time being.  We ended up using 1/16th" aluminum because we didn't think there was clearance to use 1/8".  Maybe I'll post a picture when it's done.

I think I'll also contact Mr Herschberger next week and see if he thinks our fix will hold up long term or if he thinks we should continue looking for a new door.  Thanks so much for suggesting him.

I know this is not funny to you right now but this same thing happened to my wife about a year ago. We were able to find the exact part at PPL out of Houston. It takes about 10 minutes to replace the broken part with the new one. Best I remember it was less than $100.00. I would check with them to see if they have one they could ship to you.

Good luck...

The parts diagram that Dometic provided me did not break the door into separate parts.  The shelves and handle were shown separately but the door, inside and out, was shown as all one part.  It's a Dometic New Dimensions NDR 1292 Product # 921 1481-13.  Their customer service rep said they would no longer have parts since it's obsolete.  She said my best bet was to scour the internet for a new door.  I haven't had any luck so far.  On Monday, I'm going to call Leon Hirschberger to see if he has any suggestions.

We installed the new 1/16th inch thick plate to the top of the fridge and re-glued the broken piece with superglue but when we try to install the door now we can't seem to fit it over both the top and the bottom door pivot pins.  Not sure what we need to be doing differently.  It's getting late and we're both tired so we're giving up for the night.     Tomorrow we have to change sites but after after we get settled in we'll probably look at it again.

Judy L,

I posted twice trying to send you a link to a repair kit but the RV Dreams Site flagged them as spam.   Anyway here are the part numbers for a "Black" or  "Beige" repair kit.  #3307910004  & #3307896005  Kits are available on Ebay & at some rv sites/parts places too.

Mark and Nancy,

The software seems to look for multiple links in one thread and then determines that it is SPAM.  However, I think I've noticed that if each post also quite a bit of text written in, it accepts it.  When I was a moderator, I had to approve those links that showed up to me as "Spam Comment."  I don't think anyone other the the moderators or administrator could see those comments.  As your earlier post has the links in it, I suspect Howard has already approved one of your previous comments and possibly deleted any duplicates of it.

 Terry,

Thank you for taking the time to explain why my post was flagged.  I will make sure to include more text with the links next time.

Thanks Mark, for taking the time to look for repair kits for our fridge.  It looks like it would work but we've already re-glued the broken hinge and attached the plate that we created from aluminum yesterday.   One of the links you provided included the instructions for installation and it said that if the hinge is completely broken off that the kit won't work and a new door would be required.  I'm really hoping the superglue is going to hold it well enough to last for a while.

Tomorrow I'm planning to call Leon Hirschberger to see if he can tell us how to reinstall the door.  We thought that it would just be a matter of lifting the door up onto the top pivot pin and then dropping it onto the bottom one.  Unfortunately that doesn't work.  I'm afraid it may require removing the plastic piece that runs across the top front of the refrigerator so that we can access the top pivot pin in order to remove it.  We would then be able to drop the door onto the bottom pin and reinsert the top pin and replace the plastic piece.  The problem is that the top plastic piece has all of the refrigerator controls on it and I'm a little nervous about removing it if it isn't absolutely necessary.  I'm hoping that Mr Hirschberger can walk us through the right way to replace the door.  I'd also seriously consider buying a replacement door if he could tell us where to find one.  If this fix doesn't hold then it seems that a new door may be our only option.  The longer we wait, the harder I expect it will be to find one since the unit is obsolete.

Thanks again for trying to help!

Hi Cheryl, thanks for your words of encouragement.  So far we're taking this setback pretty well.  Once we figure out how to get the door back on its hinges I'm hoping we'll be in good shape at least for a while.

There's really no comparison between our current trailer and the nightmare year that we owned the Teton.  We're still very happy to be in our present home.
