Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of searching for our new home. We have learned so much from your experiences here and from visiting dealers/kicking the tires. (And factory visits are still on the agenda.)
Are there any recent owners of Heartland RVs out there who are willing to share their experiences both with quality and warranty work? Bonus points if you have a Cyclone. (At the recommendation of others, we have explored the archives here and visited the Heartland owner's forum. Just searching for additional/new info)
Also…
Any chance there's anyone out there with a line on a pre-owned DRV Full House or a New Horizons MotoMover? These must be the golden unicorns of the toy hauler world – virtually impossible to find!
Thanks!
*****
Before I ask my specific question, is it appropriate to ask on this forum about quality and warranty experience with a specific manufacturer? I am just curious to know what the experience has been like for owners of models from a specific manufacturer.
Additionally, is it acceptable to include my direct email address in case folks aren't comfortable sharing on the forum?
Don't want to break any rules!
Thanks,
Rachael

I don't think it should be secret, either, but I'm genuinely interested in the feedback and I wouldn't want anyone to shy away from responding if they're not comfortable sharing in a public forum. I can't imagine why anyone would be - just trying to cover all the angles.
So much information to wade through during the buying/decision process!

I would not see a problem asking brand specific questions. Before asking you might do some searches on what brand you are thinking about, there is a lot of information already in the past posts on many brands. That does not mean to not ask any questions you may have, people on here are very helpful. Good luck with your research.
Thanks for the great reminder, dewwood. I didn't see exactly what I was looking for by searching the archives here, but I did uncover some good information. Since it seems to be appropriate, I'll ask the questions here (just FYI, I also took a look at the owner's forum).

We have a 2011 Heartland Landmark, and have been living in it fulltime since December 2012. We have had great luck with our fiver. We had a couple minor warranty issues (slide adjustment and a couple wires that loosened from the junction box under the slide). That's not to say we've never had problems - leak that Harry fixed by replacing some piping in the basement), refrigerator went and was replaced under the manufacturer's warranty. Many of the issues Harry has dealt with himself. When it's not something he can fix on his own, we have always had good luck finding a repair person in the area. Also, Heartland is great to deal with while you're in the warranty period. They will authorize warranty work at independent repair places, which can come in very handy when traveling. The Heartland community has been awesome, and the forum has been a resource for us many times over the past four years. We are happy with the choice we made, and would make the same one again.

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences. Yours is the kind of experience I was hoping to hear about. Bo is fairly handy and we expect that in addition to regular preventive maintenance, he’ll also be able to handle a lot of fixes that might pop up along the way.
If you don’t mind me asking, how many times were you “in” for warranty service during the warranty period?
There’s so much info on the web, it’s tough to weed through the non-issues and determine what, if anything, is truly a red flag.
Safe travels!

We actually only went in once during the actual warranty period - for the slide adjustment. Although when we bought the fiver, there was only a one year warranty and now they have upped it to two years. The junction box/loose wire issue we actually had an appointment to take it in for work, when Harry discovered where the wires were loose and fixed it himself. The fridge was the only other warranty issue, but it was manufacturers warranty, not Heartland. The cooling unit failed when we had had the fiver for a year and a half. We lived in NY at the time and had purchased our rig in TN, so being able to take it into another shop other than the one we bought it at was a big deal for us. We actually have had most of our work done at a small independent repair place.
I think the other thing that really helped us was buying the fiver at a place which was very reputable and did a great PDI. (RVs for Less in Knoxville TN) I think some of the reason we had such good luck was the fact that they go over each rig they sell with a fine toothed comb.
We have a 2014 Heartland Landmark Grand Canyon Floorplan. We have been living in it full-time since Aug 2014. We LOVE our home! We have had very few issues - nothing major. We had cabinet doors that the hinges came out of their holes and had to be re-glued (Bill did most of them himself); we had to have an area on the one (bedroom) slide planed b/c the wood was rubbing on the rug; Bill had tightened a few water lines; we've replaced the bathroom sink fixture; our inverter needed a firmware update; we needed a replacement toilet pedal and we need a replacement TV for the one outside.
We did have an issue with 1 of our slide toppers, BUT they were installed by the dealer - not Heartland.
This might seem like a long list - but all are minor things - no structural issues at all. Heartland has been great to deal with - they have sent us all needed items and Bill has done most things himself - I want to stress that has been his choice. Heartland has been more than willing to have us bring the rig in for a dealer to do the work.
We did have the rig out to IN for cosmetic repairs (our fault) and they set us up with their paint people - the guys who originally painted the rig - for all repairs and they did an amazing job! We could not be happier with the result!
Also - while we were there, Heartland took care of the issue with our slide toppers even though they were dealer installed. They called our dealer and got the dealer to warranty them so all of them (we have 3 and only one was causing an issue at the time but Heartland told the dealer the others would eventually cause the same issue) could be corrected while we were there.
So as of today - we 100% recommend Heartland - although we do not have the specific rig you mentioned. We also took the factory tour and saw how they are built - came away still very happy we got the rig we did. That was a good feeling.
Hope that helps. Good luck!

Jessica and Kelly, thank you so much for sharing your experiences. So glad to hear that they have been good. And glad to hear that the structural integrity is good.
We have definitely looked at the Landmark (we like the Newport), but we'll be traveling with mountain bikes and related gear so we really need a place to store all that equipment.
Looking forward to the day we make a decision and are one step closer to getting on the road.
Thank you again for sharing your stories!

Rachael, we recently bought a toy hauler and looked at the Cyclone. When we checked out Heartland everything was positive. We however choose to go with Grand Design and bought a Momentum, be cause we liked the floor plan better. For Pam it had the feel of a kitchen and then living room, not one room with two purposes. This is our 2nd Grand Design product and we had very good quality with both.
Thank you for the info. We looked at the Grand Design Solitude before we realized we were wanted a toy hauler and we were impressed with the quality but the bunkhouse floor plan (which we thought we wanted at the time) didn't quite meet our needs. I think we may need to take a look at the Momentum!
With respect to the garage area, do you find its easy to control the temp, etc. In addition to hauling our mountain bikes/gear, I'll be using the garage as an office so that's going to be really important to me.
Thanks for your help.
Safe travels!

If you do decide that you want to communicate privately, you can include your e-mail address, and you can even put it in your signature so that it is always available. However, rather than do that, I would suggest using the "Private Message" feature of the forums. If you have a question that you want to privately ask to a specific forum participant, click on their username and you'll then see their profile. Look down under their profile, and there is a link that can be used to send a private message.
Private messaging is also good if you want to have an extended conversation with someone without "hijacking" a thread with the conversation. However, feel free to ask any question that you wish, as long as it doesn't discuss politics or religion. You may find that you'll direct a question to one individual, and another individual may offer an alternative solution or answer.

We have a 3rd AC, you can use our garage as a meat locker at the deer camp if you needed to. We have the Momentum 380, it's the same as the Solitude 369 without the couch in the rear then add a garage. To make room for the garage they shrink everything about 10% in the living, kitchen, bath and bedroom.
We purchased a Heartland Torque 321 in Dec. The last two weeks (Memorial Day Camping) was our first outing. We absolutely love it! We were asked by friends who were camping with us if there was anything we would change in the layout and without a doubt the answer was no. With that being said..a few small things. Wish there was straight shelves in the bathroom medicine cabinet instead of angled corner shelves, it makes it awkward to but longer items in. I do not care for the lift tabs in the windows, would prefer a side open vs top. The 12 ft garage is awesome but we were in the mountains and with no insulation and no direct heat in the garage I was worried about the DD, SIL and Baby being warm enough in the back. They said they were but...mom always worries. We were extremely comfortable spent almost two weeks boondocking and had plenty of water for showers etc. Holding tanks and batteries held up extremely well. I have to say all of our expectations were exceeded and we are soooo happy with this rig.
We had a horrible experience with our Heartland. We had a 2013 Bighorn Silverado 37QB Marquis Edition(bought in October 2012). It looked great on paper and initial walk through.....but that's where it ended. We couldn't win for losing with that thing. We weren't in an area that had any authorized dealers so when it came to having it worked on under warranty....we were SOL. They paid for a repair ONE time in the very beginning when we didn't have hot water and it ended up being some wiring not hooked up in the basement area clear on the opposite side as the water heater. The guy was there for what seemed like an entire day trying to figure it out and I raised a huge stink about getting Heartland to pay for it. After that, they gave us the run around because they didn't understand why were always in the same remote area. Then they started questioning if we were full timing in it because then that would have voided the warranty. It was a mess. Our water heater never did work (except for about a 1 week period after the repair guy was there)on electric; the bedroom A/C always put out a toxic sewage smell when ran (we tried all sorts of options from venting on the roof to tearing apart the unit to clean ducts); ours was the bunkhouse model and seemed as though even though it was vented all the way through from the living room, no air or anything ever came out of those vents, making the roof stifling hot in the summer time; we had mother boards blow on our fridge; the black tank leaked causing the entire underbelly to start sagging(hubby finally had to drill holes in the sides of the "cardboard" underbelly part to let it drain before we got rid of it); the black tank valve snapped the cord and couldn't be shut; there was little to no insulation for the plumbing and we ended up having to replace the valves on the outside kitchen lines; water leaked under the kitchen sink soaking the floor all the way back to the wall where the other toilet was; tons of spots of trim on the interior popped off within the first month; the little bit of carpet had a bald spot just from vacuuming a handful of times because it was so cheap and had no backing or anything.......I could probably go on, but I think you get the idea. Most of these started happening fairly early, but because we were fulltiming, it was really hard to take it 2 hours away and leave it to get fixed. And even then we would have had to pay for our rooms and stuff while in the shop because we couldn't tell Heartland we fulltimed.
So, with all of that in mind, March 17, 2014, hubby and I attended an RV show and fell in love with our current rig. Smaller company but really liked what we saw and researched about them. We put in our down payment that day and haven't looked back. Of course we lost money on our awful but we didn't care just to see it gone. Our 2015 Open Range 3X378RLS ready for us May3, 2014 and we couldn't be happier. We have been in our unit since then and haven't looked back.
I understand your need for the extra room. Our Heartland had the bunkhouse with the extra 1/2 bath and an outside kitchen. We don't miss it a bit. Open Range was bought by Jayco since we purchased our rig and they are now known as Highland Ridge RV. I believe they have a toyhauler coming out soon if not already. Their 3X line is AMAZING! Customer service is great. I have heard great things about the warranty service, although no first hand experience really. We had one issue with our Dometic A/C in the bedroom but it got replaced and they sent us a check to refund the money we spent for the repair guy. The A/C was under warranty of course.
If you do choose Heartland, I hope you have better luck. We may have just gotten a rotten egg but you asked for past owners to share their experience, and that was mine. (We did look at a Cyclone 4000 when we were first wanting to get rid of our other one, but decided against Heartland all together after all the issues.)
And even then we would have had to pay for our rooms and stuff while in the shop because we couldn't tell Heartland we fulltimed.
So what you are saying (like most RV's) these composite boxes are only intended for the odd weekend rover and never designed to be used as a "full-time house". Is that why they fall apart and have so many issues do you think??
I just checked the Heartland forum to be sure before I posted, and the Landmark, Big Horn and Big Country are all warrantied for fulltime use. I'm not sure about the Cyclone. I know there are people fulltiming in them, but not sure if there are any exclusions on the warranty.

We've owned three Heartland units, two Bighorns and now a Landmark, and had good luck with all. We have a 2011 Landmark Grand Canyon and have had no problems with it at all. Very easy to work with and they will allow another dealer-even a dealer that doesn't sell Heartland products-with prior approval-do work on your rig. The Heartland Owners Forum is a wealth of information. Many other owners are there to answer any questions for you.
First off, Terry, thank you for the official response on the appropriateness of this post. I appreciate it. I finally found the PM feature a few days after my original post. Sometimes I can be a bit slow. LOL.
I am still waiting to hear back from Heartland on whether or not the Cyclone is warranted for full-time use. A dealer told us that it has recently been warranted for FT use, but I don't want to take that as gospel truth and I couldn't find any mention on their website. I definitely don't want to full-time in a rig that's not designed/intended/warranted for that level of use.
Dennis and Jennee, I have heard of experiences like yours, too. I'm so sorry you went through that - it must have been awful. I am glad you found an RV that you are thrilled with, but I am also very grateful that you were willing to share your experience with me. Thank you. We'll be on the lookout for Open Range's toy hauler.
Lauri, are you full-timing in your Torque? (Glad to hear you love it so far!)
Red, thanks for the feedback on the ability to control the temp in the garage of your Momentum. We may take another look at the Grand Design.
Jayc, thank you for sharing your story. With three Heartlands, it sounds like you hit the jackpot!
I really appreciate everyone's willingness to share their experiences. It can be tough to wade through all the info and random users' experiences on the internet, however, I have a lot of respect for the folks on this forum and the info you all share.
Thank you again!

We are not full-timing. We camp a lot (boondocking) during the summer and this will be out first year heading south for the winter 6-7 months. The garage was a huge deciding factor on this toy hauler. Two feet does make a lot of difference. Right now we have four wheelers and motorcycles but who knows we may end up with a UTV and some would not fit in a ten foot garage. We liked the separation between the garage and living areas so if we have guests they do have some privacy and it makes an awesome dining room! We have had the rig in for warranty work (small issues with water pressure and continuous running pump. Called the dealer, set up an appointment for a week later and we were in and out within a few hours. I do believe you get what you pay for. Our rig is what I would consider an entry level fifth wheel toy hauler but is so nice inside (friends gush and say this is nicer than some peoples homes) that we are very happy with it. We have seen some that was in the 75-100k range that were extremely nice and well built but I felt that what ours had to offer at the 50k point could not justify spending an extra 25-50k to have a dishwasher (don't use my home one) etc. Washer and dryer? quite content to use the resorts facilities where we will base out of next year. With this being said..I am youngerish (50) and things may change next year and will decide a different route but at this point having done motorhomes, bumper pull toy haulers, and now the fifth wheel hopefully this will be the solution for the direction we want to head. Whatever you decide to do will work for your life. Everyones needs and wants are different but I can say I have learned a tremendous amount from these type forums. (Hubby just looks at me and laughs when I pipe in with suggestions from info that I learned here and says "such a good idea")
