Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
Well after extensive research we chose Florida as our home state and St. Brendan's Island as our mail service. In order to get our licenses the State of Florida needs two pieces of mail from a credible source (bank, insurance company etc) showing the new address along with passport or birth certificate, old drivers license, and a SS card or W-2 with SS# on it. So I signed up and Lee went to change the BOA accounts to the new address and the website refused to take the address stating it was a mail service and you couldn't use a mail service as a home address. What the hell?? Anyone else run into this?? In all the reading I have done I never heard anyone say this had happened. Is it new?? Am I going to need to change all my banking now??
We didn't have any problems with my Credit Union, BB&T bank, or SS. I would take Bill's advice, St. Brendan's Isle's staff were very helpful when we were going through the process of changing our address. Three of us changed everything to our new address.
We use Escapees and have a BOA account. And have been involved with BOA in the sale of some of the accounts in east Texas to a regional bank, which we opted out of - along with several dozens of others. So they are very aware of RVers that use a mail forwarder. I suspect that you will need to get someone on the phone to over ride the software. Best to get the staff at St. Brendan's Isle involved.

We have two Bank of America credit cards. On one of them, we had the exact issue you had. On the other card, it took the St. Brendan's address for both home and mailing. Weird. On the card we had the issue with, we ended up using Harry's sister's address for our home and just left St. Brendan's as the mailing address.
Times are changing.. Goverment needs to keep track of people and money now... A po box or fake state address won't fly too much longer..
First time a terrorist organization uses one of those addresses, it will all be over... Surprised they haven't yet.

I assume that you consider mail forwarders a 'fake address'? What do you suggest people who fulltime do? Not go? You think terrorists haven't figured out how to rent an apartment?

Had the same issue when we opened a checking account with a new bank, we use MyRVmail in Crestview FL and they wouldn't accept it so we ended up using our daughters address in Georgia. After we opened the account I changed the address online with no problems...go figure???
If you read the REAL ID Act and the Patriot Act you will see where the problems start. The statues note that it is up to the individual banking institutions to determine who is or who is not a resident based on their address so what one bank does and what they use for criteria can be totally different from the next. The larger institutions see it a greater risk to be called to task by Uncle Sam so they set their criteria accordingly.
We had a similar issue with WF after selling our home and opening up an account using our PMB in SD but when we applied for credit cards with WF that division would not accept the PMB....until we started threatening legal action since they had already established us as customers using the same address.
They finally accept our cell phone bill with the PMB address.
Just have to get to the right people for action.

Not sure what or how to do it.. Renting a apartment leaves a paper trail, and costs money... turning on lights/gas. neighbors watching, etc..too..
Not only terrorism , but anyone wanting to scam anything.. A system like this is ideal..Shoot..A fulltime Rv'er is ideal.
Just saying..It will get harder in the future... I see the reason the want to track the money and whereabouts of everyone.. ANd I don't really agree with it.. but I guess it's for our safety, right?

Looks like a another grocery run for tin foil. BOA or WF or anybody will have whatever requirements they chose for their records, supposedly within whatever law is written for such requirements. Will it complicate some peoples lives a little bit... sure, but, it is... what it is... until the law is changed. Then we'll have to deal with that. Talk about the "bad guys", paper trails and such doesn't really address the OP's request. Sorry Trace, I can't help you with such things, but while a PITA, they are just things people have to deal with. It's their house and they make the rules... and we'll watch the thread for useful solutions. Can't say I'm in favor of portions of the READ ID Act or the Patriot Act... but then, that would be a discussion for somewhere else.

We are paperless so the address is really just for initial establishment of residency. If I use a relatives address in another state could that cause me problems down the road with taxes?? My only relatives are in Ohio which has state tax. It is unclear from the comments above whether or not your banking address impacts your residency. Anyone know ??
I agree we need to call them and will do so, just in all my research never saw anyone talk about this particular problem and before I change all my banking I would really like to know the risks.
Yes, the physical address at a relative's home in a state that taxes income and is in need of tax monies to keep it running may give you a headache. All it takes is for the bank/brokerage firm to send a 1099 of any kind to that address, and the state tax department will get an electronic copy. Then it is up to you to show you didn't 'live' there and owe them money. The Real ID act allows one to have a 'next of kin' address on file for contact purposes that is NOT listed as your residence and this satisfies the requirement of the law - - the trick is to get the bank/brokerage firm to accept that and in some cases (like when the firm has been the subject of federal investigations for laundering money) they may be very dogmatic in what they will accept so you can quote the CFR http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/CFR-2010-title31-vol1/pdf/CFR-2010-title31-vol1-sec103-121.pdf that allows using the next-of-kin for contact purposes only.

There have been ongoing conversations on this topic on the Escapees forum. A lot of people had investment accounts with several large brokerage firms like Scott Trade, etc., and all of a sudden were told they had to close either accounts or get a physical address. This lead to a lot of people looking at the specifics of the federal laws, reading the CFRs (Code of Federal Regulations) to see exactly what the regulations are and getting the information out to people. And as I mentioned several Escapees are in the process of opting out of the sell-off of accounts by BOA to a local bank in east Texas so we've become very involved in the process of making sure that our money is where we want it to be.
The biggest problem with changing banks (at least for us) is having to get all of the direct deposits/withdrawals changed over - huge amount of paperwork when dealing with retirement investments.

If anyone is considering changing I would advise you to check out Alliant Credit Union. We use HSA for ACA high deductibles. They pay a higher rate than any bank would. jfyi

Talked to the owner of St. Brendan's who was very nice and said there have been some BOA customers who had trouble and the way they have gotten around it is to use a different permanent address and theirs as mailing. Since we don't have any relatives in Florida we can use, and I am nervous about splitting the addresses because of possible tax implications, we made an appt with BOA and went into a Florida bank to talk to someone. When I told here we lived in our RV she got it. When I said we didn't have a permanent residence she got it. She even said, that was on her bucket list of things to do when she got older. She then told me she couldn't help me because the back office systems could not be overriden. When I pushed she said that's just the way the system works. No assistance trying to find us a workaround...to the contrary she got a bit of an attitude when I just didn't say ok. She did change our mailing address to St. Brendan's but when I asked for her to send a statement there she stated she couldn't do that. I was pretty angry by the time I left.
I did change NBT ( a small local New Hampshire bank) online but I also need to send them a signed form so they can mail a statement to me. Not sure why doesn't say that online but ok. I also am trying to change Fidelity,,,can't wait to see what happens there. I am still working for my company so I need to change my address with them which feeds my benefits, 401K, and fleet car registration information, so if for some reason they don't accept it ...that's a deal breaker for me. Obviously we could use our parents address in Ohio, but this would cost a significant amount in state taxes which I wasn't paying in New Hampshire and am not planning on paying in Florida.
The reason I am keeping this thread going is as much research as I did, I never saw this type of information so I want to let folks know changing residencies may not be as easy as it's often made out to be. Well that's not true no one says it's easy, but I certainly didn't think it would be this hard.
Anyways, I'll keep letting you know how it works out.
Wow, what a pain. We are extremely lucky that Harry's sister lives in Jacksonville and we were able to use her address for our permanent address and St. Brendan's as our mailing. One thing I don't get though, why couldn't she mail a statement to you at your mailing address?
You should not be having these issues. We have never had a problem. We left BOA long before we went full time.

We use SBI (17 years and counting), we use BOA no problems ever. Go talk to a real person at a branch. We haven't gotten a paper statement in years all online, but BOA has no problems sending replacement cards etc to SBI, and the SBI address is on the online statement.

Banks see a dollar sign when they see you. Credit unions you are a member. They are non profit. Profits have to go back to the members in reduced rates and higher dividends. No brainer for us. Alliant Credit Union is likely the largest and most friendly to rvers

Fidelity, American Express, and NBT (our local bank) all changed with no problem, BOA still absolutely refuses to change. I guess the main point is not to assume it will all go easily and for us the process is taking way longer than I expected. Luckily we have time because we are in Florida for 10 weeks, but this would have been a nasty surprise if we were trying to get this done over a few days.
