Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
I-17 out of Flagstaff south has a long 6% grade which does level out and then continues over a pretty long distance – like about 18 miles.We’ve driven it many times with the rig below and one almost as heavy.Not a big deal, it’s just long. Just don’t let your speed get away from you.Don’t ride the brakes.Brake pretty hard, get the speed down 15 or so MPH and then let it build back up letting your brakes cool before braking pretty hard again.It will depend on your truck and experience as to how this is handled.But nonetheless, don’t ride the brakes, use lower gears and you will be OK.Big wide Interstate, don’t be overly concerned.
We really haven’t seen much bad road east of Flagstaff on I-40 until you get to Oklahoma City, then some parts are really bad till east of Memphis at least in a lot of sections.But that’s just our perspective and relative to other roads having driven that route twice this year and for many years prior to and from Phoenix from the east coast.
Thanks. Great info. I'm kind of familiar with I40. Went from Denver to Havasu last Memorial week to check it out for next winter's stint. As Steve put it, pretty rough road. Shook a few things loose on my 5er last time around.
Also great info on the grade out of Flagstaff. So the total 6% grade is a few miles then a lesser grade for 18 miles? In any case, I figure it can't be much worse than I70 at the Eisenhower tunnel, or I36 going into Estes Park, or Rt 50 going over Monarch Pass, or I25 over Raton Pass. Admittedly, despite the fact that I've done them, they still make me a tad nervous. Hey, it is what it is!
I’m saying that the worse part of I-17 down to Phoenix is about 18 or so miles, but it doesn’t go downhill at 6% for the entire 18 miles.If you have driven Eisenhower before without issues, we did that this year and last, then I-17 will not will not be an issue for you.You’re experienced and know how to drive.
Bill & Linda's comments about coming down I-17 from Flagstaff are spot on. Don't know nor have we ever heard of that campground (you're talkin' to locals here) but Dead Horse State Park is nearby in Cottonwood and Zane Gray is our favorite in Camp Verde area. Note: ALL local RV parks are full for Thanksgiving weekend and long term is the same, snowbirds are in.

Don't know nor have we ever heard of that campground (you're talkin' to locals here) but Dead Horse State Park is nearby in Cottonwood and Zane Gray is our favorite in Camp Verde area. Note: ALL local RV parks are full for Thanksgiving weekend and long term is the same, snowbirds are in.

Everywhere its supposed to be warm fills up. I-35 south thru Teas looks like a continuous caravan with all the folks heading to the Rio Grade valley area, and its not even Thanksgiving.
We stayed at Krazy K this past October for an overnight on our way to Yuma. It is close to the interstate and a very nice small campground, very well maintained. We had a FHU 50 amp pull through site and were able to use the Passport America discount for our one night. It was a little confusing to get there. Make sure to follow directions from the campground. We would definitely stay again.

Just catching up on posts on this forum, I've only been driving the rig for the last 6 months and even with my limited experience I was able to drive the I-17 stretch from Flagstaff to the exit for Cottonwood without any issue. Just don't try to keep up with all the little cars and enjoy the scenery!
