I have property where Carol works. I've spent considerable time in Mission and the entire Valley, both before and after owning property.

Like anywhere, it is what you make of it. There can be things to do in the park you are in, all the big box stores are there, and there are the normal "developed city" activities. There are not a lot of scenic outdoor attractions IMO. But there are plenty of things to keep you occupied.

Just a comment - don't believe all the things you hear about "border violence and problems". It is simply not true. If you look at the crime rate of the Valley is is among the safest places to be.

6th year in Mission coming up.....like Jack indicated it will be 'what you make it' AND we have NEVER felt unsafe in the RGV

We workamped in McAllen and Mission for five years and it's a great place to be year round. Campgrounds get pretty full with Winter Texans until they all run home to file their taxes. Lots of things to do, good weather, low cost of living and great food. We had very good experiences there and would return in a flash. We also lived and worked in Corpus Christi for about a year and loved it. Close to the Naval Station in Ingleside there's a fantastic, authentic Thai restaurant that is worth the trip. Texas is an amazing state, from seashore to desert.

Cheryl: Since it is a snowbird location, if you decide to go, make sure you'll be able to get into an RV park and I would really research the reviews on anything available since the less desirable will be the ones most likely to have openings at the last minute and this applies to all areas of the US. Have you ever been to TX? We crossed TX a few times, never that far south though. I had basic training at Lackland AFB, years ago and enjoyed seeing San Antonio so if you go to TX try to spend some time there. I would like to go to Big Bend but we haven't gotten there yet.

We're planning to come to Mission in January, staying in a park that we've stayed in several times. We feel as safe there as we do anywhere.

We've been offered the job, but they want someone asap and we can't get there until the 2nd week of Dec (we have commitments and can't leave Raleigh until after Thanksgiving and at 2-300 miles a day, it will take at least 1 to 1-1/2 weeks to drive there). We're just waiting for the word whether they are willing to wait for us that long or will get someone else who can get there sooner.

Cheryl: be careful on their waiting on you; especially if you need to work camp. They could locate someone while you are in route. I myself would not travel that far for a first time employ unless I knew that I wanted to stay without work camping. I also would try and get as many benefits as possible!!!

Cheryl, I think you will find that when you have to get somewhere that 200 miles per day quickly becomes unreasonable and a waist of time when you are all set up at 12:30 pm and you still have 6 days to go. Or you can drive till 3 pm and be done in 3 days with half the set up and tear down and campground fees. Now when you are meandering it is different. And I think Mission is the best place to stay in the Valley. This is my second year in Mission and my fifth in the Valley.

There is no set rule on miles a day. We recently drove 1400 in about 28 hours. Didn't entirely intend to, but it worked that way. We left our site at 2:30-3 pm and made our way up to I20 from south Texas Gonzales area, made it there by 6pm or so, got fuel and turned east. Decided to get to the other side of Shreveport La, but there was no traffic on the road. We ended up stopping about halfway across Mississippi for about 4-5 hours to give my back a rest and eat, lay down for a power nap in the 5'er, got up around 5am and kept driving. We were in Myrtle Beach set up at 7pm and eating at Murrells Inlet at the Dead Dog Saloon by 9.
Moral of the story, if you need to relocate, for jobs, weather, family, you can roll down the road as log as your comfortable.

So any news Cheryl? Where will you be in Mission?

A little update for me. I'm no longer working for the developer at Retama Village and Bentsen Palm Village RV Resort. I am staying here though -- we're building a house in Retama Village and hope to be moved in before Christmas.

So rather than only being able to sell new properties for the developer, I can now help buyers with new homes here, resales, and properties anywhere else in the RGV. So if you are looking for a spot in the RGV, feel free to contact me. I've been spending lots of time checking out the different communities.

As Jack said, don't let the news reports sway you about coming here. And while there is a shortage of "scenic wonders," the weather is great, the people are very friendly and the cost of living is low.

Hope to connect with more of you this winter since I'm not tied to the office so much!

I also posted this in "Workamping questions" -- looks like this deal fell through so we will NOT be going there after all. Bottom line is that although they seemed to agree to everything over the phone, as soon as we put it in writing, they said it wouldn't work.

So the original plans to FL it is.
