Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
Does anyone know if I can put an 18 cu residential refrigerator (like those offered in the Jayco Pinnacle or the DRV Tradtion) in the Grand Design Solitude? Thanks for your answers and advice.
Measure, measure and measure. You'll likely need a counter depth and you'll likely need to modify or remove a few cabinets. (FYI all counter depths are different....measure & re-measure) Its not just a remove and replace but it can be done. We did ours this summer....we are very happy.
The normal one is a Samsung RF197 French Door, which is being replaced by the Samsung RF18 French Door now. The RF197 does seem to run OK with a modified sinewave inverter, but most fridges need a pure sinewave inverter. You can get a 1000 watt pure sinewave for $179, so this is not a major expense (http://www.donrowe.com/KISAE-SW1210-Power-Inverter-p/sw1210.htm). Unless you only travel under 6 hours, you will need an inverter and at least 4 batteries.
"Measure, measure, and measure" for sure. The RF197 was 3/4" taller than the Whirlpool side-by-side we ended up with, but the side-by-side was also 36" wide. We had a furnace below, so the 3/4" was important. Watch for all clearances, people have been defeated by hallways, counters, doorways, etc. I know someone who thought they had 1/4" of leeway depthwise and the round power cord added more than 1/2", so they could not get the fridge into the hole.

Thanks! I'll be sure to bring the tape measure with me before we make a final decision.
Rosita,
When we put one of the Samsungs in our Mobile Suites, in order to get it in, we had to lower the "floor" on which the refrigerator is set. In our case, there was a drawer under the "floor" for the refrigerator, so when we lowered that floor, we lost the use of the drawer. Additionally, by removing the drawer, we saw that there was a slide roller in that same cavity. In our case, we were fortunate that lowering the "floor" for the refrigerator did not hamper us from being able to adjust or perform maintenance on that roller.
Be sure and look at your measurement from the top of the slide itself to the bottom (or if you will, the floor) for the refrigerator. If you have to lower your "floor," there could be other issues like a roller. If you go to the link below, it will take you to my Photobucket account and let you see the photos that I took during our modification for the Samsung fridge. Pictures 3, 4 and 5 show the cavity below the refrigerator and its "floor" with the drawer removed. In those pictures, one cannot see the slide roller, although one can barely see the top of the adjusting bolt for the roller. Later photos on page one does show the roller, once the original "floor" has be removed.
