Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
As we hopefully get closer to buying, after the house sells, I can see while we are semi- on the same page, we may not be on the exact same page. Was just wondering if anyone else ran into this "bump" along the road to choosing their rig. This is common for us and, of course, mine is the best choice simply because it is my choice and you would think my husband would know this after 30 some years. We are looking for the hard-to-find used units so ultimately in the end we will be lucky to find either one of our selections.
Well you see.........First I had purchased a 1993 MCI highway coach with plans to make a motorhome conversion. However after sourcing and adding up a lot of major items like generator, inverters, batteries, aqua-hot, appliances, and a lot of other stuff, I was already getting over $50,000.00 plus a zillion hours which I didn't have. The coach just sat in the yard at the shop. So after a couple years I had purchased the current '99 Fleetwood American Dream off an online auction (crankyape.com). When I told her I just won a bid on a motorhome she flipped, she said "What the heck you gonna do with that thing.......Park it beside the bus?". Things got much better though, once we flew down to Florida to pick it up and started motoring back home up the Interstate. Then I said to her "What do you think now?" She smiled and said can I actually cook a roast in the oven as we're driving down the road?". I told her we could but I think we'll just wait until we actually make it home then try a roast some other time.
She really likes it but she will never admit it to me.

After 25 plus years my DH only listens to reason. Did I mention that "Reason" is my nickname? Somehow what "I" want turns into what "We" want.
Of course, many, many times what "He" wants is also what "I" want, that's why were still married. We compromise, I choose the floor plan and he chooses the mechanicals.
I make all the decisions. Of course I always ask her opinion first and then we always agree. And that is my secret to staying married for over 40 years.

Marriage is compromise. Both of you need to "give" a little and find a third unit that makes you both "mostly" happy, as there is no perfect RV, for anyone.
Put your must haves, want to haves, and can not have, on a spread sheet. Assign a number value to each and buy the one that scores the best.
We are looking at a possible change out of our present unit, which scores 84 out of one hundred. It will take a unit scoring above that for me to spend any money making a change. Otherwise, what is the point?

I agree, compromise is the key. I pretty much chose the interiors and he chose the mechanicals. We did start, however, by coming up with a "must haves" list and then a "would like to have" list. That helped a lot.
If you take much stock in astrology which I don't take a lot but see something to it, we are 3 adults, all Leos with myself and my husband born 6 days apart, all first borns and we do things differently and never the easy way. Two bossy senior female dogs and a demanding guinea pig top off the mania.
Our decision may totally morph into just about anything by the time the house sells. Most U-Hauls in KS are headed out of state! The positive is that we are saving more money and I'll keep telling myself that while I am freezing and slipping/sliding on the ice this winter.
I envy those that don't have to compromise or submit. I just can't imagine..............
Will the "no compromise" continue into constant disagreement on what campground and/or RV Park you will stay in? Makes for a very difficult life when both are stuck in a 200-400 square foot home.

Only for one of you..lol
I'm joking of course..
We travel and preview the campgrounds in advance now. Typically she's ok with normal campgrounds .. I prefer the the higher end.. So it's been pretty easy "sell".. so far..Location is our thing. We want to be close to the attractions and cities.

I have been going to address the fantasy about how much a couple needs to be the fairy tale romance in order to live in limited space. We have full-timed twice for 2 years at a time in the past. We were always 3 plus the pets. We never felt "stuck" but then we are campers and love the outdoors. I think most people don't understand the dynamics of relationships. The people I saw having the worst of it were couples that lived separate lives, retired and hit the road to suddenly really get to know one another after the kids were gone. Sort of an introduction to the changed person you married many years ago. If a couple is used to being together all the time and don't have separate lives, I see no reason it won't go smoothly. No surprises, I know what to expect, "for better or worse".
We adopted our son with DS 28 years ago when he was 4 weeks old. This was a choice we made. He now functions at the pre-school level. Programs are terrible for him. We have adjusted our lifestyle and will continue to adjust our lifestyle to compensate for the choice we made so we are not new to "challenge". We are always together, family and aren't two old grumpy folks that are just unhappy with themselves. Usually, those not happy with themselves will never be happy or content in any lifestyle or with any partner.
So, it is only rumor that you have to have a fairy tale relationship to full-time RV. We known many people who didn't. You have to be used to being together or it does make it more of a challenge.
Actually, what we are looking at is one likes more windows on one and the other likes the luxury of the interior of the other, both are top-of-line used and no one would dispute that so minor but if the choice comes now.............. I am sure the loser will survive this one.

Lee wanted a coach and I a fifth wheel. Since the price was higher on the coach and my claustrophobia was tough to manage in it we decided in a fifth wheel. We were down to two of those after the RV show...he really wanted one and I another. Turned out what made me unhappy about about his choice weighed more than what made him unhappy about mine. You need to be seriously truthful about what you can live with and without because 400 square feet can feel like a cosy home or a prison. Trust me the prison feeling is bad bad.
