Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Fuel mileage

Trying to help my in-laws do research. They are looking at a 2014 phaeton 42lh. Does anyone have one that can give us an idea of mpg? It's a tag axle. Thank you

I don't have one, but you are talking about a huge, heavy vehicle believe me when I say it will be single digit probably 5 to 6 MPG maybe 8 at best. No need to over estimate go with 5 MPG just to be on the safe side.

We had a 45' Newmar MH with a 400 Cummings engine and we averaged right around 7.8 mph.

Your mileage may differ, depending on how you drive and where you are traveling.biggrin

Just tell them that the enjoyment of being in the outdoors, seeing the sights, quality time with each other, family and friends far outweighs the fuel costs.

Most diesel MHs in that size range will get between 8 to 10 MPH depending on driving style.

Most ask me what mine gets for mileage. I respond by..................."If I got to worry about that then I shouldn't have bought it".
I also will run the generator while I'm motoring if it's hot out, so that also pulls the fuel mileage down. It's just the "cost of doing business". I don't even think about it.

Somewhere around 8 mpg depending upon how much lead is in the foot of the driver. Which isn't bad mileage for a 15+ ton house bouncing down the road.

If their worried about fuel milage they best find a smaller vehicle; EG. Sprinter or a van conversion motorhome; B or C which should be in the low to mid teens. The bigger they are the more they drink!

We have a 2014 42LH. The engine is far from being broken in but we were right at the 7.5 mpg from Florida to Oregon. We did see a tank at 8 mpg. But like I said, it has well under 10,000 miles on it and we expect to see a little better as it gets broken in. If it stayed around 8 mpg I would be happy enough.

I know the party line is you don't buy an Rv if you're worried about gas mileage. And I used to believe that mpg didn't matter. But now I think that works only if you are vacationing in an RV rather than living in it full time. We live in and travel in ours full time. Our gas tank holds 80 gallons and a little difference in gas mileage can make a big difference at the pump and wallet. Fuel costs are a major concern for those of us that don't stay in one place too long. So I started driving more conservatively and now we have more money to spend on other household items. We consider our motor home to be our house and just like our former sticks and bricks we have monthly expenses that we have some control over. Fuel costs are an expense that we have some control over. In the summer in our S & B during the day we would turn the thermostat up to conserve energy and save money, in the winter we turned the thermostat down during the day when nobody is at home and again at night. Again to save money and conserve energy. As a retired couple we live on a fixed income, so it only makes sense to trim our expenses whenever possible. If I were buying another RV, gas mileage would be one of my least concerns, but once I own it I would try to get the best gas mileage possible.

The OP hasn't suggested a concern for the fuel expense.  Only fuel mileage.  I am assuming in order to compute a fuel budget.  If you are looking at 1000 miles per month at 8MPG and $3.80 per gallon that's $475 a month.  If stationary a good portion of the month... you could cut that by half.   If you are touring constantly it could be double.  Only the OP's in-laws will know what kind of driving they'll be doing. With a MH, you'll also have the fuel expense of the toad to calculate also.

Gene is right that fuel expense is more of an issue for short term camping or vacationing.... full time, it's less important, or so it would seem.

FWIW, Brian
