Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Whole Home Water Softener

Ok, so up here in lovely North Dakota, the water in the RV park is VERY HARD!!  Since we bought our new trailer with all the upgraded gadgets....residential fridge w/ ice and water in door, washing machine, residential kitchen faucet...etc....I don't want everything ruined.  We bought an EcoFlow unit for RV's that was supposed to be a water conditioner/filter that was salt free.....it didn't really work.  The first filter is red/brown by the first week.  Last week we purchased the Watts 10,000 grain RV water softener....which seemed to work but I just tested the water again (i installed a week ago) and the water is already hard again.  The regeneration process is a bit more taxing than household water softeners and I really don't have the time or the want to have to do it every single week.  That's a lot of table salt and time/water to go through.  So, I was thinking of the WaterBoss 365 unit.  It's a whole home system but quite compact in size.  We are in an indoor rv park, so I'm not worried about it having to sit outside.  Just not sure if it will even connect to my rig.  We of course use a water hose and I believe those units are more pipe based.  My question is....has anyone installed a residential unit and was it hard and worth it???  Getting ready to pull the trigger and order but was hoping to get some feedback first.  Thanks

Many people have had good experiences with the RV Water Filter Store, I would give them a call...

I designed a whole house RO systems - with input from the Waterfilterstore (Rick). New Horizons installed it in our 2015 coach. You can see the details in this document.

It shouldn't matter what type of connections the water softener has, just go to a hardware store and put together an adapter for your water hoses. If you have place to put a standard house size water softener that might work best if you're not moving anytime soon.
BTW what's an indoor rv park?

folivier: Here is one example with pictures in ND - http://www.ndindoorrvpark.com/.  Winters in ND are harsh, so the RV is inside.

bjoyce and folivier, that is the exact one that we are in. I was told it was the only one like it. It's a very good concept for the harsh weather in North Dakota. In the winter, the inside of the buildings are usually kept at around 55 degrees. I really need to get some pics and post them, since the website really only has pics from when it was being built 2 years ago.
Also, I bought the WaterBoss 900. Its a residential unit but small enough to fit in the basement storage for travel purposes. I figure if we ever end up somewhere outside again, we can fashion some sort of insulated/heat taped shell to place over the unit and insulate the hoses of course. Not too worried considering where we are right now and we'll deal with the other when the time comes. Just seems to be a lot less hassle than the cylinder manual regeneration ones made for rv's. Plus, the new one is a 34,600 grain unit and the rv one is only 10,000 grain. With the extremely hard well water here, the higher capacity is much better. We can set the new unit to automatically regenerate as often as we would like at whatever time of day we want....regeneration takes about 21 minutes according to the specs online on our particular unit. Can't wait for it to get here in a couple days! Looks to be a very simple process to adapt the fittings to fit water hose. The only thing we have to figure out is the hose that needs to go to the sewer for the regeneration water. It needs to stay connected and include some sort of check valve so the sewage smell doesn't travel back up the hose into the softener unit.
I will definitely try to get some pics of the park up for everyone who is curious to see.

From my experience, the harder the water the sooner it will need to regen. More and more parks are against RO systems, they waste too much water. Figures I've seen say the ratio is 5:1 on those systems. It takes 5 gallons of water to make 1 gallon of soft water. The other 4 gallons go into the sewer system. Bullhead City AZ. had terrible water and we bought bottled water for drinking and cooking. We use a Mark8000 softener, but like you, found the hard water in some locations too much for the softener to manage.

Quick update: We got the whole home water softener installed...and it's AWESOME!! Best investment we have made. Going to have to unhook and put inside when traveling (little too tall for basement storage), but very minor issue for the protection it provides for my appliances and pipes. WaterBoss 365 (900)....great unit so far! Very little maintenance....especially compared to RV water softeners. Again, I will get pics up....started work up here with the hubby so I hardly see my home these days. A few tweaks to hook up to garden hose instead of home pipes and also the drainage pipe, but hubby is quite handy and it wasn't hard to do. I will get some pics up hopefully this weekend.
