Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
We have a new, 2013 Montana 3582 with Lippert Auto Levelers. We've had it since April. After the 10day trip to bring it back home and a couple of days set up on our dusty road (using the levelers) I noticed the front leveler was coated with grease and dust (making it more noticeable). We took it out for another 3 week trip and it seems worse plus another one has a tiny bit of grease. Not dripping, just a coating. Is this normal or something we should have checked. The local RV place said it is normal for a pressured system to leak a bit, especially in very hot weather.
Debbie, we have the Lippert Auto Levels on our Bighorn and I have not seen what you are describing with ours. I will check this afternoon when I get off work and back to the campground. I was told by Heartland that you do not have to have a Heartland dealership do warranty work on your rig. You can have any dealership perform the work that is willing to do so. FYI I know you got your rig in MI so I hope that helps if you do find a need for service on the levelers. Curt
Sounds like the dealer could use a lesson. The down riggers on my unit are Equalizer Systems but same principle. They need to be heavy duty so are basically 4x4 columns dropping out of the sleeves. In five years, never leaked a drop. Extending portion of the down rigger is always dry 10 to 120*F. According to the manufacturer they should be dry and other than possibly a touch of silicone if they're going to be down for a long time are best left alone. The oil & resulting grit is not good. As already said, it either leaks or it doesn't. Call Lippert Customer Service they can help you. Good luck, safe sojourns.

Hydraulics should not leak.Some manufactures (Quadra, who make the “Big Foot” system) recommend cleaning / wiping down the cylinders with pure silicone spray to clean and also to prevent pitting in the long term.Not a spray type that has other ingredients other than silicone and definitely not “WD-40”.(WD-40 will actually hold dust and dirt on the cylinders.)We’ve never had a leak or seepage with ours in the last 8 years.Yours shouldn’t leak either as has been commented.
I know this is an old link but I'd like to hear any updates on the Lippert Leveling System. My system was perfect for the first year, but naturally after the warrantee ran out.....problem. Now my front levelers drop about 4 inches ever two days and have to be re-leveled. Contacting Lippert wasn't much help as they only sell parts. I explained that I do not have a leak anywhere and the level in the tank is always constant. They suggest a cylinder leak test, suspecting it is leaking back from the high side to the low side of the cylinder internally. So I'd have to bring it to a local repair / replace shop.
Gary - here's a more recent thread regarding Lippert Leveling system, we're not fans of Lippert. We were in and out of the same shop in Mesa AZ 3 times in March. We had a leak in the hydraulic hose, so that was replaced, O-rings replaced as well. Eventually almost everything except the actual pump was replaced and we're still having intermittent issues.
Our final resolution is to put the slides / levelers out in a very specific order and then the opposite when we bring them in. Lightest slide first, working our way to the heaviest, then side to side levelers, then we run the landing gear up and down 3 times before we finally retract them. When setting up, landing gear, then side to side levelers, put the lightest slide out first, heaviest out last and hope for the best.
Even after all the repairs and replacements, we've have issues, came home one day to find the landing gear totally collapsed, have still had a couple instances of landing gear drifting as we made our way from the campsite to a dump station. Thus far have been able to remedy it by running the landing gear up and down multiple times, but the point is, it's still not fixed, this last step shouldn't be necessary.

I also have the 6 point Lippert Auto Level System. So far, so good. About a month on the road, with 20 or so set up, take downs with no leaks. I spray the legs with pure silicon and wipe them down before each retraction. Probably a little overkill, but I a pilot, and there is no such thing as "over maintained" in my book. Surely hope our system remains trouble free ... but you never know.
