Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
As the subject states, I'm trying to see which will work better for us. Has anyone done a complete comparison between the two? Such as, Medicare, Medicare supplements, auto insurance, RV insurance, licenses and registration, etc? I believe you have to go back to SD on your birthday to renew drivers licenses. My birthday is in February and I'm pretty sure I don't want to be there in February! LOL!
We also have family in SE GA and FL, so we know we will be coming back this way. I've started my own research, but wondered if anyone already had what I need.
I did an extensive analysis of all the states in 2011. Hasn't been updated, though, and didn't include Medicare/Medicaid. I'm happy to share the spreadsheet if you PM me your email address.

I would think FL would be medicare friendly.. Alot of retirees located there..lol
Insurance in FL was cheaper than nevada.. Not as cheap as SD.
Reg fee etc will be simular.. except FL hits you a little to buy plates first time.. Then it's cheap every year..
SD still has tax.. I think 3%.. FL , where I am going is 6%
Alot of info on the internet..
Montanna LLC is a great option as well.. if you intend on doing business with the rv.. 0 tax.
Deciding factor for me was.. I would save like 4k start up.. at SD.. But would have to travel there.. and back -1500... then have to return every 5 years..$1500 everytime..
And if there was ever a issue.. I would need to go there..
Since I will be traveling east cost first year, have family who's address I can use, and may end up in florida to die, .. I'm just buiting the bullet and pay the tax..
I think it makes much more sense when you buy a 350k and up rig..But at my level, it does not.

Florida seems like a good choice. Being military when I was there, I don't have an RVers perspective. I can't use it as my home base because they don't register big trucks as personal vehicles without walking on water. I remember the annual auto registration was pretty cheap.

We did SD.....very easy....yes first time you need to go to DMV to get license but now you can renew online but have to go in person once every ten years...no income tax, only 3%tax of vehicle purhases, everthing other than the DL can be done remotely thru a mail service. AlternativeResources in Sioux Falls.
We are proud South Dakotans!

When I checked into renewing on line last year on their web site it looked like you would have to furnish some documentation (like a rent receipt) that would preclude a full timer from using that option. I would call the DMV or check with someone like Alternative Resources before counting on renewing a drivers license on line.
The winter renewal is not an issue though. They will give you an extension of at least six months if you call and ask.

We started out domiciled in SD, and then moved to FL last year. We documented the process at www.technomadia.com/florida and compared the differences in costs and logistics.
As we're far from eligible for Medicare, I don't know about that subject... but our health insurance was about a wash in cost.
Thanks for the replies, y'all! Cheryl, I sent you a PM. Thanks for the offer. Cherie, I saw your process a while ago, but will check it again. I wonder about Medicare supplements, but I know you are not there yet.
SD Medicare supplement rates are among the lowest in the country. It's going to depend on which county in FL you are comparing to, but for the most part SD will be 25-50%+ cheaper. Of course the coverage is the same no matter where you buy since Medicare supplements are standardized.
