Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

The questions that make you laugh!!

I'm guessing many of you have had a few amusing questions along the road.  Most of ours have been questions regarding either walking our cat on a leash (how did you train her to do that???) or the antennas (WiFi Ranger and Maximum Signal - people wonder what SciFi we have attached to the roof).  Today I was asked by a colleague who knows I work my virtual job from the RV where we were this week, again, not an usual question.  However, as the conversation continued on a conference call with 5 participants I actually got asked (after I shared our moving from TX, to NM, to AZ and next week to SoCal - 4 moves in 4 weeks) if I was on the run from the law????  LOL, I just about choked on my iced teawink  Really?? Am I running from the law??   Really, is that what he thinks this RV life is all about??  OK, I'm still laughing.  BTW, after the last 7 weeks of intense family time and then getting the stomach flu the first week we weren't with family, I needed a good laugh, so no, I didn't take offense, but I'm still chuckling as I think about it.

So, what other oddball, hysterical and non-sensical questions have you been asked?  biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

"You don't have a home?"

(Pointing To RV) "You are looking at it."

"Really?"

While refueling a Class C rental (I was by myself), the woman at the pump on the other side commented, "Those (pointing at the RV) are pretty handy for camping, everything is there inside, you can even make yourself a lunch while travelling down the road without stopping."  I jokingly replied, "Yep, I just put in on auto-pilot and walk over to the fridge and pull out a cold one and a sandwich."  She replied, "Wow that's really cool!". As she got in her car and drove off all I could think of was....

"Here's your sign!" (Bill Engvall's tag line)biggrin

During questioning by a young female dreamer, I was asked, where we went to the bathroom. "We have a toilet", sez I.

"Oh, where does the stuff go?"

"Into a tank"

"I see, so it just goes a way, but where?"

"Well no...we have to empty it from time to time"

"Oh my, we had to have our septic tank emptied one time.
It must get expensive having to call the service all the time"

"Not really, we do it ourselves."

"Oh, that's convenient. My neighbor needs to have their septic tank done,
may I have your card?"

I nearly spewed the soda I was drinking. Composing my laughter, I was able to explain more clearly.
It was a little easier to explain where our water comes from, LOL.

Oh we have run the gambit on the questions from the "Why would you do a thing like that? to the "Aren't those trailer parks for people that are on welfare?".

When you try and explain the lifestyle and most folks just look at you like you lost your mind. We get a kick from the expression on their faces when we tell them we are just planning for the Zombie Apocalypse!

We too get the question about training the cat to walk on the leash. When we explain, no she decided to do that, and that she takes us on walks not the other way around some people seem to get it. Our favorite is the person who just KNOWS that our cat will love their dog. No matter how much we say "No, she doesn't like dogs, she has a full set of claws and will put them in the dog's nose if it gets to close," there is always one who will insist their dog is just so friendly and sure enough, they will let out to much line and Shadow, sitting very still, will hiss and if the dog doesn't back away, will swipe a claw through it's nose.

When 2 off-leash 80# labs (our dogs always mind so perfectly that they don't have to be on a leash) came charging us, Shadow got between Dave's legs for extra protection but managed to draw blood on one of the labs nose. Dogs owners were mad at us for being out walking around the RV park with our cat - told us to move! Owners of the park did nothing - by the time we left this spring, they had a dozen or so dogs running around off leash. Needless to say, we will not be back to that park next winter and have let them know why.

Ruth,

I might just be the source of the comment about running from the law.  When we were doing our research and explained to people what we were doing, they would ask why we would want to do that.

My normal response was so that I could stay one step ahead of the law.

That usually resulted in blank stares or some negative comment until I explained to them that we worked for a law enforcement agency and that after retirement, we would be "one step ahead of the law" as we traveled.

I'm still not sure they got it.

Terry - there's a lot about this life that people "don't get". But, right now, it's the right lifestyle for us. I say this as I sit here in Tucson knowing there was one last snow storm that gave a light dusting to places like OK, TN and KY based on what my family is telling me!!

Another question we got asked today by a person who has never RV'd is what we do with the "extra rooms" (aka the slides) when we go down the road??? HeHe, for some reason he thought they detached from the rest of the rig.

I love the "extra rooms" and Wheel Estates' "Can I have your card?!! I would have had iced tea up my nose on those two.

I love the looks of pity and how a conversation goes silent when people ask us where we live and we answer in our RV. Or when they ask, "Where are you from?" And we say everywhere.

Before we sold our house and took up this lifestyle I had lived in 12 different states. Got tired of folks who had never left their hometown asking why I moved so much. My two word reply, "Witness Protection Program". Another conversation stopper!

But we can only take our cat for a drag! (She only goes where she wants to go.)

Yep, I love the question "Where are you from?"

I always look at them and say, "Well this week are from (where ever we currently are)", they just look at me with that blank / glazed eye look.

Rather than telling people we are "Trailer Trash" I tell them we are Gypsy's, that term seems to work better. It seems most people's image of being a Gypsy is more understandable than telling them we are Fulltime RVers.

My family has finally figured out what we are doing and seem to understand, Debra's family still thinks we are nuts and asks all the time "When are we going to get a Home?"

Since I still work with the Home Elevator Company, Debra follows me in the 1/2 Ton "Company" truck, it has Residential Elevators logo on the side of it. When we stop for fuel or for overnight I get asked all the time, You actually put Elevators in peoples homes?

Family members are often the hardest to explain your motivations to. This not only applies to a move into the RV lifestyle, but anything that seems out of the ordinary to them in your life.
I think they call that concern out of love. Things you can justify with all the points of what is "level reasoning" to you make absolutely no sense to them.
Family...its not a love 'em or leave 'em proposition no matter where you are.

Sometimes not having family, I feel the loss during sleepless nights. In the sunlight of a new day I forget everything else as new wonders unfold before me.
Due to my years as a vagabond its hard to discern whether its a blessing or a curse not having a family.

I figure that, in time, family will begin to understand and even become envious once they hear of the fun you're having and see the great shots your camera captures. They will come to the realization that you are doing something spectacular and wish they were there too.
Keep sending them emails with photos and they will get the "picture".

Keep in mind that I have no personal experience in this matter, so YMMV ;)

Our families all have known that we're crazy for 30 years. First we moved away from everyone else, then we homeschooled our kids, then we moved even farther away (to the Ozarks), and now we've sold all of our stuff and moved into a motor home.

On the other hand, lots of people have said that they wish they could do what we're doing, and said it in a way that sure sounded like they were just a little bit jealous of us.

At our reunion last weekend we shared our plans with old friends. One comment/question stuck out: "You can meet up with us when we have a hotel room and sleep in a real bed and use the real shower - won't you miss having them all the time?"

Not sure how a hotel room is more "real" than our own home but he clearly didn't get the concept. We just thanked them for the offer and let it slide.

Got a better offer from another friend who has a pad and full hookups at their home - we'll definitely spend some time there!

Jodee,

You have hit on something.  Quite some time back, there was a participant here with the username of Bubbadan.  He was forced to give up his travel trailer because his wife always complained when they went somewhere.  He just felt if she wasn't enjoying it, then there was no need to have one.  He did stay around on the forums for some time after that.

Some time later, they were discussing their plans to go do some missionary work in south Texas.  His wife asked him one night about the possibility of having another trailer.  She liked the idea of sleeping on her own sheets, that she washed herself, and having her own bathroom instead of staying in motels while they were doing the work.  Last I heard from Dan, she was picking out new state parks and campgrounds to go to.

There can be many different little things that causes one to choose the route they choose to go, and not every one is beneficial for everyone else.

Jodee - your comment made me think of another story relayed to us by other friends who are FT. Their grown children were trying to convince this couple to stay at their house for a week to take care of the grandkids so the parents could take a mini vacation. Now, like many of us grandparents, they were happy to consider that but when the son started saying, well, you can have a real bed and a real show, our friends got a little annoyed. What do they think we live in anyways?? And when did a "sleep number bed" quit being a "real bed"???

When we told our kids this is what we were going to do, our youngest said, "I give you 6 months and you will be back at the house." When they delivered the trailer he said, "I may have to rethink this 6 month thing. In fact, I may have to consider this for myself."

MarkS - totally understand the comments. I don't think our kids had any clue how big our "home on wheels" was until they actually saw it. I think the clincher was the comment by one of the grandtwins, something along the line of "Mommy, why don't we have a TV this big? Watching movies with Grandpa and Grandma is cool!!!!"

Another statement we hear is "So you are homeless."

No, we are "house less", we have a home. It is on wheels.

If I care,I will tell this story:

As the story goes: A reporter was interviewing a child that had just lost everything in a house fire. The reporter said: “How does it feel not having a home?” The child responded: “We still have a home. We just don’t have a place to put it.” So young and yet so wise.

Judging by the number of people that look at you like you're either destitute, crazy or both.... I don't think we have much to worry about no matter how hard we try to "educate" them. The "conventional" wisdom will always bring the fearful flock back into the same rut the masses are used to. Okay with mesmile now that I have seen the light!winkbiggrin

Gotta help out our friends, especially those that are entrepreneurs.

We park our truck in visitor parking and the Beetle next to the RV.

"Do you pull your RV with a Beetle?"

"Yep. We put the hitch into the sunroof."

Wow!

Mike,

Do you have a catalog for your signs?  I might just have to have you make us one and send it to us.

Gotta help out our friends, especially those that are entrepreneurs.

Pretty much all the signs I do are originals...customers give me a theme and I run with it , I figure by the end of the summer I will have collected enough photo's to create a website to start online orders......right now I kinda like the freebird feeling of only working a day here or there without commitments...LOL

Once you have a website, a Facebook page, even some business cards, you'll be busier than ever and won't have a minute to yourself! You don't want that!

When I told a friend our plans, she pulled me aside and asked me (very quietly in a whisper) "Are you having financial difficulties?"
It was very sweet and I held back my laughter, and even after I told her no that we wanted to do this, she didn't get it at all.
