We take two strategies:
1) We camp earlier in the week and don't leave until the holiday is over. A few days of craziness and it is done. The normal folks go back to work and your fulltiming life can go on. This might require reservations.
2) Go somewhere out of the way for a long weekend. We have hung out in Glendive MT, Thunder Bay ON, places too far for city folks to go on a short trip.

One other point, winter holidays in the south are also camping weekends. We learned that one President's Day weekend in San Diego.

Major summer holidays I go to non tourist areas and hunker down......traffic volume is to high .......to many parties.....prefer a nice deserted boondock spot!!!!

We're just learning this as full timers, we're in AZ and this part Friday night at an AZ state park we found ourselves in the middle of a very noisy group occupying at least 6 campsites with lots of dogs, kids, and a weekend party attitude. Due to our schedule we know that Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends will be travel weekends for us as we head north and then back south. We're also found some issues in trying to reserve campsites on those long weekends, some of the state and county parks require a 3 night stay which doesn't work if we're traveling and only want 1-2 nights of the weekend. Yet something else we're trying to figure out. I think we might have a few nights of casino camping on those weekends.

We have found those weekends are when membership parks work well for us. City/county parks don't fill like state parks and can be a good idea, also look at fairgrounds. And if traveling you'll find those parks along the interstate will have room as they aren't family destination.

We also found that Thanksgiving in the Dallas-Ft. worth area(where our DD &SIL are) require reservations way out - it is a BIG Football weekend.

In the Phoenix area it can get hectic in March, spring training and lots of families take Spring Break trips to see their teams.

Of course if in Louisiana, find out when Mardi Gras is.

And if you are in a northern border state remember July 1st is a holiday for Canadians.

Barb, thanks for the idea. We haven't done much looking at the membership parks, since that isn't really our style, but they might be useful then. We've stayed in a couple of really nice county parks, so that may be where we head at those times.
