Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Battery advice

Hi all, just bought my new-to-me 1998 Fleetwood Flair, it is in the shop being serviced and checked out. The adviser looked at the battery for starting the engine ( Chevy 454) it is a Wal-Mart special with 650 CCA. He suggested that I replace soon with an AC-Delco 800 or 850CCA.

Any advice would be appreciated, as he stated that this battery could eventually damage the starter.

Thanks,

Roger

Since it is for starting of the engine, I'd check with a Chevy dealer and ask what are the requirements for a 454.  They will be able to give you the best answer.

Or, maybe peruse through some Chevy owners forums and see if there are any topics on batteries.

While I'm not a mechanic in any definition of the word, I've been involved with numerous types of vehicles including 18-wheelers and farm equipment.  I'd think a stronger battery might always be the best thing.  I do know that "low voltage" is damaging to electrical motors, so I'm presuming that it would also apply to the "motor" in a starter.

Roger, if you have room for a bigger battery, go for the biggest cranking amp battery they have, it can not hurt.
I always put the biggest battery in my car, plow truck, tractor, RVs that would fit, sometimes up to 1000 cold cranking amps, bigger is always better if you have the room.
A low battery will slow the starter and increase amp draw, will heat the cables and heat up the starter, can burn up the starter in the long run.
If you have the extra money go with AGM batteries, a much better battery, Sams Club has some very good AGM batteries and very low prices, I have bought 5 AGM batteries from Sams Club so far, very happy with them, I do need to get 2 more AGM batteries from Sams club before we start our journey.
And they are made in the USA.

The Delco battery that came with my motor home lasted about five years. The Walmart battery I replaced it with is going on five years and still okay.
