Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Motorhome dragging a pickup in park for 6 miles

Don't be this stupid.  Or if you are, make sure no one takes photos or video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZFCHk1XCDY

Mac McClellan (Gambler) posted this on the Escapees forum.  Dash cams are everywhere and one GPS shown at CES had one built-in.  Also check some of the other videos shown once this one ends, one shows a new trailer tipping over on a curve since the hitch came off the ball.

Thanks for sharing. I sure hope there are no cameras around to catch the first stupid thing we do..... It's just a matter of when, not if!! But, watching and reading the forums, hopefully will make us a lot more aware (I was going to say smarter, but that may be a stretch!!)

I once dragged my electric cord for over 40 miles and didn't know until I got to the campground. Wore off the plug entirely!! Had to buy a new end and install it before I could set up. Now I NEVER forget to walk around and CHECK everything before I pull out.

We were staying at our favorite spot, Rincon Parkway near Ventura, CA. The campground is popular so you often see RVs going back and forth several times looking for or waiting for a spot to open. I watched a motorhome go by that was towing a VW dunebuggy all four down. As he went by I heard the engine on the dunebuggy going pop,pop,pop.... It was in gear as he towed it down the road. This same motorhome went by again a few minutes later and then again a few minutes later, each time in the opposite direction so I know he was looking for a spot. After the 3rd time by I decided I was going to stand there and wait for him to come back by so I could flag him down...he didn't come back by a 4th time.

Even if it was in 4th gear, that couldn't have been good for the engine.

I remember seeing a news report a few years back where a gentleman in a motorhome was towing small pickup on a highwy in a forest area.  The right rear tire of the pickup shredded, the rim was scraping on the highway creating sparks.  As this RVer went down the road the sparks were setting the vegetation on fire.  Several people tried to get him to stop but he ignored them and kept going.  Finally he stopped, but had created a big forest fire.

It's not that he did it but when he was told about it he didn't do anything about it but just went on. I've done a few stupid things but when I found out I at least corrected the problem as best I could.

I should have said that in my opinion the guy driving the motorhome has never made a wrong decision in his life. His family, friends and everyone else disagrees. I have met many who need to be 200% or 500% wrong to be wrong, but there are those who are never wrong no matter what, in their mind.

This was the same feeling that I got.  Maybe we have known some of the same people?  Probably more likely there are just more like this then we think. You would think that since he was towing that periodically he would check the mirrors especially if he got a whiff of burning rubber.  Maybe he was just exhausted or had some sort of health issue, needed mediation, etc.  He didn't show a hint of concern.  I'm surprised that traffic in the oncoming lane weren't blowing their horns or maybe that is illegal now?

We all do stupid things, but not correcting your mistake so you ruin your own property or the property of others truly is "Ya can't fix stupid"

I do see where people could forget to take a vehicle out of gear or remove the parking brake, but if someone is trying to tell you something pay attention!
