Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Been there? Workamped there?

Hi everyone!  We are getting excited.  We have decided that even though the house hasn't sold yet, we will attempt to find a job down south for a couple months, preferably Jan & Feb as we have to be back in Iowa in early March.

So my question; has anyone stayed at the Belton/Stillhouse COE Lake in Belton, TX? Do you know what the weather is like in Jan & Feb; we have spent very little time in Texas.  A couple weeks in San Antonio about 8 years ago, in January.  That's it.

There is an open position and my application with the Volunteer Clearinghouse has been forwarded to them.  I have an appointment to talk to them on Monday and am making my list of questions.

Another COE location we have an appointment to discuss, also next week, is in Lemon Cove, CA at Lake Kaweah.  I'm thinking this location even though it is in California, might be a bit colder than what I want since it is in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. Possibly snow?  That's what we are trying to get away from!!!  I think I could handle 50's, 60's instead of 70's as that is still warmer than 0 - 30 that is normal for Iowa.  smile

My third option is St. Lucie, FL again with the COE.  I'm thinking that area of Florida would be the warmest of the three locations.  All three positions are ones we would be quite happy trying out for our first volunteer/workamping experience.

Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!! I sure appreciate all you RV-Dreamers and the encouragement and knowledge that you share. Hope to meet some of you on the road, once we get to the point that we will be on the road more frequently.  Probably 2015, as most of 2014 will probably be getting situated in a new location closer to our children.  Even though I would LOVE to fulltime, Hubby cannot be convinced, so we will part-time/full-time for about 6 months or so a year.  Compromise is what it's all about, right?

Port St. Lucie Fla. will be the warmest and is located near the Indian River inlets. Nice area with Fort pierce and Vero Beach nearby....its on the Atlantic side and its mild all winter. (I frequented this area)

Lemon cove is just northeast of LA in the citrus area...gets a little chilly at nite but a beautiful area skirting the dessert.....a little pricey for basics but all of Ca. is that way.....spent time backpacking and working in Fresno a few times , loved the area!

Belton Tx. is a little cool and soggy during the winter and really doesnt start warming up til the end of Feb. lots of lakes and good fishing there but to far north in Tx. to winter for me, Tends to be damp and its above Houston near Midway and tends to collect the end affects of what ever comes off the gulf everytime.

Thanks Mike! If that is where we end up and you are there also, we'll have to meet up. I love to cook so you'll have to come over for a meal and let our pups play.

I live in the central Texas area not far from this park.  Including this one, there are five COE parks in the surrounding two county area.    I have used all of them and would put Stillhouse somewhere in the middle as campgrounds go.  I can't help with the working conditions, but I can say that the gate attendant site locations are more aesthetically pleasing at Cedar Ridge and Live Oak.

I might agree with Lucky Mike that the location is not as warm as CA or FL in the winter, but it isn't "soggy."  That would mean that we got regular rain or snow - which we do not.  Average temps in our "winter" season is around 60 but can drop lower at night.   I've been here for a long time and can safely say that freezing temps do occur, but they are rare.

One thing to consider for your return trip is that we are a lot closer to IA than is CA or FL.
