Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
Good morning all! I have a question for everyone. I live in Tennessee and have Fibromyalgia, which, in the wintertime, has become almost crippling. Hubby retires in 4 years and what we would like to do is sell our house and 5th wheel and buy a Class A. We'd love to buy an rv lot somewhere in the southwest (desert) that doesn't get too cold - Arizona, New Mexico, Texas (no humidity). Ideally, we'll stay there in the winter and travel during the summer. By the way, it also has to be close to a VA hospital.
I don't know where to start to look - it seems overwhelming. Can anyone recommend some towns, rv resorts that we could start with. We are not fancy people, so we'r enot looking for those $100k + resorts...
Thanks so much!

I won't be able to give you specifics but have you accessed the listing of VA hospitals online: www.va.gov/directory/guide/division_flsh.asp Also, how close to a VA hospital? Does it need to be a hospital that is real close or can it be a community outpatient clinic with sometimes going into the hospital that would be further away? In AZ, I would choose the Tucson area since we lived north of Tucson for some time in the 90s and it seemed at that time that this area looked less expensive and definitely less "fancy" than the Phoenix area. A lot of snowbirds flock to the SE area of the state. I would say to first line up where the VA hospitals are and how close you need to be to one.
I would say within an hour's driving. Neither one of us is in good health, so that would be a priority for us. I don't know alot about the Tuscon area. Is it also desert? I used to live in the desert in Australia and loved it. I can handle the dry heat all day long - it's the cold and humidity I can't stand anymore - rather, my body can't, lol.

Yes, Tucson/Phoenix are both desert, Tucson more so, I think. One thing to consider is that while these areas are great in the winter months, summer starts early. If/When it comes to the point that you can't travel, you'll need a well-insulated RV to weather the summer heat which is brutal with the other issue being dust, blowing dirt/dust which is the cost of "dry". Both southern NM and western TX are desert-like also. NM/TX, El Paso has a VA hospital and I see Big Spring, TX does but I am not familiar with that. I would probably try to rent a lot in an area before buying to just see what it is like. We are both veterans and also are looking to be nearer to the VA Hospitals and it can be challenging.
You might also want to check the Escapees Co-op parks. One in Benson, AZ comes to mind. Additionally we saw a very interesting lot for sale in the Texas hill country on the Escapees site. www.rvnetwork.com/index.php

I lived in west Texas for 16 years and had a friend who used to drive to Big Spring VA hospital for his DR's visits. Keep in mind that in the summer it is blowing dust at times, and in the winter since it is upper desert it can get cold and we used to get usually 1 dusting of snow in Odessa where I lived.
Edit: it is 1 hour, 62 miles from Odessa TX to Big spring, and 40 minutes 40 miles from Midland TX.
Hope this helps.

Thanks again! We still have some time to go and just want to start researching an narrowing down the areas we'd like to live in. We'd like to narrow them down to two and then try them out when it's time.

With the Tucson area, you would have a choice of going north to Marana or Casa Grande and I think Casa Grande has a CBOC now. A lot of people go to the SE corner, Sierra Vista, Benson, Bisbee areas. You would have a wide choice in that area.
