Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

When I contacted the Wholesalewarranty.com people Howard works with they had no problem quoting a Dodge 3500 dually 4 x 4, but said they couldn't get coverage for a F450. Does anyone have an extended warranty on a five year old F450??
Not sure where you've found the truck, but back in 2009 when we bought our 2008 F450 as used, it was through a Ford dealer and they offered the warranty. Other than Wholesale Warranty, I'm not familiar with "aftermarket" suppliers of warranties. Hopefully, someone else can chime in with some answers for you.

I cannot assure you this is correct for the Wholesalewarranty.com people with whom we do have an extended warranty on our trailer, not our truck.However, this may be the reason:
The F-450, because of its’ “badge,” i.e. 450, is considered to be an MDT, class 4 – Medium Duty Truck – which by definition, ratings and “badge” it is.
The new Dodge/Ram 3500HD, with actually higher ratings in many cases than the F-450, has a LDT badge – 3500HD - Light Duty Truck – Class 3. Because of this, at this time, the insurance companies consider the 3500HD NOT to be a commercial vehicle and the Ford, F-450, due to its badge IS a commercial rated vehicle.Hence, they won’t insure them as a private truck as such.
We had this explained to us by our insurance company that while our Chevy 3500HD had in all respects for towing MDT class 4 ratings it was still considered a Class 3 LDT –“3500.” Because of the “3500 badge” they would be glad to insure it as a private truck, not commercial.However, if we got an F-450 it would have to go into the commercial account and therefore much higher insurance costs.
As has been said before, in many cases the 3500/ 350 / 450, etc. has little to do with the tow and axle, etc. ratings now which is all that matters. You have to check the specific truck, not the badge. However, that badge can have a lot to do with insurance, warrenty and other legal aspects.
You hit it on the head Bill. I got a further reply from the Wholesale Warranty folks, the F450 is classed as MDT and no warranty offered. It looks like Terry got the extended warranty as his Ford wasn't even broke in when he bought it. Terry-do you still carry an extended warranty the old gal?
The warranty is still in effect. When we made the purchase, the F450 only had 46,000 miles on it, so yeah, it was barely broke in. Now, when the term length of the extended warranty is reached, I'm not sure what we will run into with regards to purchasing another one for the future.
One thing to mention beyond Bill's comment. If I understand correctly, the class of the truck is based on its GVWR. With the new Dodge, they "expanded" the GCVW and tow weight ratings to numbers higher than the F450, but they didn't expand the GVWR of the truck above 14,000 lbs.
In one of the other forum postings, one of the participants on the forum found that the high ratings for the Dodge does not include one with an extended or crew cab.

We are still on the fence over a 2008 Dodge 3500 or a Ford F450. We will be pushing the limit with our fiver loaded on the Dodge - but we did that last time. I just don't want to take a further hit on MPG with the Ford, but like the greater braking capacity - just a lot more praying to do!
We have a 2008 F-450 that we bought in July of 2012 with 37k miles. We got an extended warranty from Wholesale Warranties that covers it until 114k miles. We got the coverage through Howard just after he started with the company. Maybe there is a problem getting coverage after the age of 4 years?

Yea, I was just reviewing the published Ram 3500 charts.Jim and Peggy, don't know if this is in your budget, but the 3500 Crew Cab / 4x4 / DRW / Long Box / Laramie comes in with pretty nice numbers.And the GVWR with the Crew Cab / 4x4 / DRW / Laramie is listed at 14,000, including this one. So I suspect that other forum poster has older info.
Even with the 3.73 rear end you get 32,000 GCWR and a 23,510 trailer rating.Rear Axle is 9,750 and Front is 6,000. GVWR 14,000
The 4.10 moves the GCWR up to 37,500 and the Trailer to 29,010. GVWR 14,000 still with Crew Cab / 4x4, etc.
Obviously Ram has changed the transmission gearing so the very high speed rear ends aren’t required to get the same result.They get the same final torque to the rear wheels, just doing it in different gearing “places.”More than one way to skin a cat as other manufactures have done.
All that said, it’s still, as of today, a class 3 LDT which could be an advantage for some.

I'm sure your correct as pertains to Wholesalewarranty.com as you have been there specifically. It also may have to do with the specific underwriter.I do know that Progressive was a lot easier to deal with in some cases as to actual vehicle insurance.But the “commercial part” of the situation can still be an issue.Been there
I have been told by Wholesale Warranties that they can't get a warranty from any of their auto providers on anything over a 1-ton truck. So yes, it appears to be because it is a "Medium Duty Truck". Not sure why Mark was able to get a warranty on his 2008.
When we had our engine issues with our 2005 Ford F450, I learned that I could not get an extended warranty - even from a Ford dealer - AFTER the original 5-year/100,000 mile warranty expired. However, I could have gotten one BEFORE the expiration of the manufacturer's warranty. Wish I would have done that. :)
So, if we still have a few thousand miles on our warranty, sounds like now is the time to contact our Ford dealer and buy the extended warranty? Is that really the only option for an F450?
I still had some remaining warranty (4-5 months) on my F-450 when I got the Extended Warranty. I didn't know at the time it would be an issue latter but am glad I did it when I did! Howards engine issue was my inspiration to get the warranty.
