Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

MH Inspectors

Does any one know the best way to find a good and reliable person to inspect a used RV? I am not completely sure what my budget will be as I research and look for a used RV. I know that I will be looking for either a class C or A between 22 to 26FT..

I am looking to full time solo and be a workamper as I travel. I will know what my budget will be in a month or 2. As I wait I have been doing my research and checking out rigs on places like Craigslist and RVTrader. My price range as I wait will most likely be 10 to 15K and I have found many, but I know they will have to be inspected, and I am in Southern California. I appreciate any and all advice.

Thanks,

Roger

Hi Roger, I have a class c 24' and a new engine but on my 29' I took it to a heavy duty mech to have it fully checked [cost triple compared to a car] but it was well worth it as the engine is your heart so you must make sure it is mechanically sound. Make sure he does not just hook up to a computed system but actually manually checks the transmission and the engine fully. The rest of the stuff [propane, fridge, stove, furnace] can be checked at any rv repair shop[ the owner should show all things are in working order, yes make him show it ALL]. The regular inspections have nothing to do with the actual running of the vehicle so do Not count on that as a clearance from anyone. If someone is telling you it runs great but will not go with you on your dime to a mechanic DO NOT BUY IT, 10 to 15k is to much money to take a chance on. Most people who know their unit is in decent order will have no problem helping you out as they stand to gain a great deal of cash if the deal goes through. If buying from a lot still take it to an outside mechanic as it is even easier for them to say it has been checked by their mechanic [ and he may have made it road worthy for the first 100 miles or so] and they pay the guy. Good luck to you and try and resist the urge to buy the first one you see, hold off and gain a list of possibilities and then narrow it down based on mechanical first and then all the other fun stuff.....Deb

Sologal has it right. I want to add that an RV Technician is a better choice than someone calling themselves an "Inspector" as you want someone with quite a bite of experience in actually making the repairs, someone that has been there and done that. The inspection will be pricey so you want to get enough knowledge on your own to be able to weed through several before deciding on one that you would want to purchase. If you see someone with an RV, strike up a conversation and see who they use for repairs in your area.

Thanks SnowGypsy,
I have been doing research online for about 6 months, and just finished an ebook "How to Buy a used RV" by Bill myers, and a book "Retire to an Rv".
I also used to own a 27' tag along trailer by KZ, so I do have some previous experience but just not with a MH.

Thanks again,

Roger

There is a new course being offered for certified RV inspectors, read about it on Workamper news. They will have a list if certified inspectors under a new organization. FWIW:

Mobile RV Academy and Workamper News have teamed up to bring you a LIVE 5-DAY COURSE with extensive hands-on training combined with in-depth classroom instruction that will transform you not only into a Master of Your RV, but if you choose to accept it, into an RV Maintenance Technician for Campgrounds, or even an NRVIA Certified RV Inspector!

As a college professor teaching in depth course-work on RVs for many years, Terry Cooper, the Texas RV Professor, has developed a wonderful teaching style that will ensure you walk away with a great understanding of the inner-workings of RVs, and a boost to your confidence.

I have been following the Workamper/RV Inspector, well, whatever and have some concerns which is why I suggest an RV tech with experience, certified or not, someone who knows their way around an RV and that takes more than a few courses. The certification for the inspectors is being developed and called NRVIA not associated with the RVIA that I could find. RV systems are complicated. I would want someone competent when it comes to the electrical and propane systems for sure since that is serious business.
