Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
Today driving down I-90, just south into WY a car came up side of us and started pointing...we looked back and the Sun Chaser awning was coming open. Once before it opened about 2 inches, so we had been putting a tie wrap on one arm. That side was locked closed,, but the other side was open about 2 ft. and the awning was unfurling. It was blowing about 20 mph. We finally got it opened, but then it wouldn't close. Got the ladder out and with a helping hand it finally closed. We feel so lucky, nothing broke or got sprung and the awning is still intact. Oh, we now have tie wraps on both arms. Not sure what caused it to open on it's own, but will always have ties on now when we travel.

Oops, It was the power Weather Pro awning that came open, not the manual Sun Chaser. Hank just found a link to Domestic that says don't drive until fixed! !
Been there. The wind can catch it just right and boom, for whatever reason. They make positive awning locks you can add for travel, some examples, both commercial and make your own:
Not sure Mike, it's on a 2005 Mobile Suite. Made by Dometic, it's a Sun Chaser and all auto. We have a switch it the closet by the door, in the basement and a remote.
you also want to check and see if the motor was replaced part of the recall is the replacement motors........another solution is to close the awning for transport and drilla hole through both arms , at most tractor supplies you can purchase Snap lock safety pins ......just push the pin through and lock the cam over......this can be done for around 10.Bucks

Well at least it is figured out and you can get it fixed for free!!!!!.........make sure you use wire tie or velcro wraps during travel in the mean time......

Mike,
Is this the type of pin you were referring to?

I remember this happening to my husband and me as we were heading down I-70 during a stiff wind. We got pulled over and I hung onto the awning for dear life so it wouldn't open all the way. I was nearly blown off my feet! We tied the awning closed, but was that ever a scare! Later we found out one of the awning clips had broken.
Update....Dometic told us ours was not part of the recall. When I asked what would cause it to spontaneously open, their reply was call a service tech! We have a service tech from Rapid City that is going to check it out. He said the motor is on one side and the other has a spring that may have broken or is weak. He will also run interference for us with Dometic if it's their problem. Ann
