Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Water filter turned green

I just changed the whole house type water filter and found it turned green.  The filter is bright white when first installed.  I believe it is alge growing on the filter, but is that a problem?  Seems to me that this is a good thing that it is not going into the 5er.

We are in Florida since December and have been at 2 different parks.  I changed the last filter after I moved to this park 2 months ago and it was as I would expect, rust colored.  It is municipale water here also.

Any ideas as if this is anything to worry about!

that type of algae is either in the water from the supply and that would worry me all the way to the office......or your filter is outside in the sun.

If you just changed the filter I would change it again and see what happens.....its possible that the site you are on was not used for a while before you arrived and the algae grew in the stagnant pipe.....normally I blow off ten to 15 gallons of water prior to hooking up my water lines in any park just to make sure dirt & stagnant water has been cleared

The park site has been used right up to the day we arrived. The filter is not ouside in the sun, it is located behind the door to the water manifold.  We are located very close to the water supply, like 3 feet.  We are using a 25 foot hose though to attach to the supply and that is in the sun.  My thought is that the alge is forming in the hose and is being filtered by the filter.  The inside of the filter is still bright white.  The green is on the out side of the filter only.

Take an old white T-shirt or a piece of cheese cloth .......remove your hose from the hydrant bib and run the water thru the shirt or cloth to see if it is coming from the water source......then attach your hose and disconnect from the coach and repeat the process to see if its your hose....if it is coming from your hose you can either replace it or bleach the hose by taking a funnel and pouring a 1/4 cup of bleach and a gallon of water into the hose and attaching the ends together for an hour......then re-attach to the hydrant bib and rinse til solution is cleared

Mike:  This morning after it stopped raining here in Tampa I tried the white Tee shirt trick.  I actually used an old but clean white sock.  Ran a few gallons straight from the sourse water bib and no green.  Put on water hose and it tured green in just a few seconds.  So it seems it coming from the hose.  I changed the hose out with the extra one that we carry and also changed out the filter core again and cleaned out the housing.

I decided to just purchase a new water hose instead of trying to clean the old one. We have only been on the road 9 months, but this is the first time this has happened.  I have as much hose as possible under the RV to keep it shaded all but a couple hours in the evening.

Any ideas on how to keep it from happening in the future?

Thanks:  Mark

When I ran my drinking water hose I tried to keep as much as possible under the trailer or at least in the shade.Hot sun shining on a rubber hose(even a drinking hose) creates the green gunk.

I think I may need to add shade here.  We were in the Miami area for 3 months but the hose was completly shaded all day.  Now, here in Tamapa, we have sun a couple hours each day and at the hotest part of the day.

Just learned another thing thing today!

Thanks guys!

durring the summer it can be an issue depending on the water supply.....think of the pool at the park...there are days no matter haw hard you try it will start to algae and you have to up the chlorine or bromide levels to knock it down when its hot and sunny out.

if it is a real problem there set up a schedule to use bleach or bromide solution to clean out your hose every week or 2 once you start doing it the solution will impregnate into the hose and it will keep the algae from coming back......the down side will be ,it will smell like city water with chlorine in it.

you also should keep an eye on your onboard fresh water tank to make sure you didnt pick up the algae somewhere else.....the filter system is great but can only filter out so much of the impurities and that includes algae and small organisms

also running the water several times a day will keep the hose temp down and make it a little harder for the algae to grow
