Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
Ok I,ll try to give as much info as i can without being to long winded. Long story short, we took our 2000 jayco designer 5th wheel in to get a new roof installed. When I went to pick it up I saw that the left turn/brake light was on. it was not plugged into the truck yet just into 110v. So I unplugged it and the light went out. I tried to use the power jacks and they didnt work. I found the fuse for the 12v batteries was blown, replaced that and the left turn/brake light come back on. If i remove the fuse from the 12v batteries and plug it into the truck and remove the fuse from the truck that feeds power to the trailer all the lights work fine. The dealer replace the rubber roof and installed a new air conditioner and thermostat. After a long battle with the dealer, not going to type all of that out, they arent going to do anything for me. and at this point i dont really want them to touch it again anyway. So now its my problem to fix it. I had to remove the bulbs from the lights so that they are not on all the time. (we do live in it, and its plugged in all the time). I did inspect the trailer plug to see if maybe it was ran over and there was a short in there but it looks ok. The weather here hasnt been to good to get into it yet so i have not messed with it at all. The fuse for the 12v batteries is still good and have not had any other problems. I have worked with 12v trailer lights before but the wireing on them was easy to get to. im not sure where to start on this? I still think it is something they did but i guess its possible it was a freak thing. I do know i need to get it fixed before our next trip. any help would be great.
Walt You said that you had two things done to your unit. 1) new roof installed, 2) new AC with thermostat. A couple of years back I had a new roof installed on my 1990 5ver and while they were working on it I would go and look at the progress. I was really surprised that all of the wiring for the trailer was run through the rafters of the roof in one big bunch. I am not sure but I am guessing that yours could be the same way and the some how pinched the left turn/stop wire and the main 12v power supply wire together. I would have it checked out in the area of the new AC unit first. If that dose not show up any thing then I would think about running a new wire for the Left Turn/Stop Light.
thanks, i was wondering about that. They told me that the wiring for the lights didnt run near the roof, but of course thats what they would tell me since they insist that it was nothing they did. I wish I had went and looked at it while they were working on it but it was about an hour drive and had to much faith in there work. i think it may come down to me running a new wire but im not sure how diffucult that will be since everything is enclosed.
Somewhere in the reroofing process, a staple has cut into a cable. Call Jayco and ask where the light wiring ran. Since they have been in business so long they ought to be able to help you out.
if you need to find an energized wire or wire loom within a ceiling or home ,a simple map needle compass slid across the surface will pick up the magnetic field when you pass over the wire and show you the direction it is running and stop within 1'inch as you pass over the short.
Kinda simple but neat system (this is the method in which the 150.00 short finder is made).....I learned this on" Bill Nye the Science guy" while my kids were fixing the remote for me.

Thanks, I didn't even think about calling jayco. I'll try giving them a call and see what they say. Yea I'm sure they pinched or pierced a wire somewhere.
