Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
There is so much innovation going on, hope something comes of all of it, without too much red tape. This article is about some Palestinian college students who invented a device which can convert plastic waste into gasoline, kerosene or diesel. Wouldn't it be cool to have a portable device on our rigs? Just throw the recycling in, and make gas!
“Using our device, we can get rid of a huge amount of waste, which is difficult to do in Palestine,” she told IPS. “Also since we don’t have petrol here, we can produce fuel at a lower cost. One litre of fuel will cost five shekels (about 1.30 dollars).” Occupation Can't Stifle Innovation
While it might be an interesting concept, I'm not sure that either plan will generate enough fuel to be of any value for traveling. It takes an awful lot of fuel to power an RV down the road.
With a recent event at our RV when we had an electrical problem with the power coming to the pole, we had to run our Honda EU3000IS generator quite a bit. Just to fuel in the morning and in the afternoon for a few hours, it was at least 5 gallons a day. We certainly don't use enough plactic containers nor go to the bathroom enough to make the systems viable for us.
Now, it might work better for folks that are more "minimumalist," but only time would tell.

Hmmnnn!!!! Somewhere I seen a picture of a trash compacter truck converted into an RV. Taking that concept, use the trash truck to tow a 5er or TT and use the plastic refuse to power it!!!! Bad Idea!!!

So I guess that would mean we could get on down the road with an electric motor and fewer potty breaks........(I just dread the thought of a short.......Oh wait!!! federal law requires system shutdown during refueling and for safety sake, no cell phone usage in the potty area!!!)

No Mike, instead of running a generator on gas or diesel while boondocking, you run it on pee. That way, you also don't have to worry about emptying the black tank quite so often either. I think it would be safe to use your cell phone, besides, as long as the feds aren't watching.... and they should not be watching you do that!
To get gas to go down the road, you can use the device invented by the Palestinian kids, to recycle plastic. So, as you go down the road, you can stop to pick up plastic trash, which will also help the environment and beautify America, and toss it into the plastic trash/gas converting device. Simple!
I think I should e-mail those girls in Nigeria, and suggest they put out an eBook of instructions. Perhaps that could help them finance their start up costs.

Just out of curiosity, how much additional fuel would be used by stopping and starting again to pick up trash? I'd think that there would have to be an awful lot of plastic trash in one place to make it even remotely feasible. Plus, how much available weight would have to be offset to allow for a device to convert plastic to fuel?

Good questions, Terry and Jo, food for thought. Just helping to brainstorm alternative energy alternatives, that someday, might be useful. Every big idea starts small!
Hey Les and Sue, maybe if everyone took more control of their own "energy independence", grew some of their own food, took care of their own health, etc, etc, it would give the "waste" in D.C. less to dictate over.
